Hey everybody
I'm new to the forum and just wanted some input/opinion from some more real snowboarders such as yourselves. My names grant I live in Iowa and my engineering development and design (EDD) capstone class is challenging my team and i, to improve a hobby we enjoy. so naturally after buying a Craigslist board this x-mas I realized how strap ins can take a decent amount of time, and can really take away from the overall experience especially if your enjoying hills that aren't at a resort or skii park (a.k.a backyard, golf courses, state parks., Short hills, Etc.) my teams overall goal is to create a market for the gap between crappy $30 boards to the $200+ boards with a medium/low priced, medium quality board to help improve # of people involved in the sport, but mainly the overall experience.

Moral of the story:
Any ideas, opinions, criticism (constructive), on the idea of a 80$ (low price, medium quality) board with built-in step-ins for beginners just wanting to find out if that's what they want to pursue. [which in the end improves all boarders options with more $ invested in the market] or another idea of bringing back the "endangered species" of step-in bindings like, flow, but with a more durable, affordable design. ($55)

And for those who are really lazy haha:
Is the idea of designing a 80$ board w/built in step-ins for beginners or redesigning step-ins altogether an appeasing idea to consumers (you)

Any feedback is appreciated
Thanks again,

Your idea is so poorly conceived they I'm actually dumber than before I read it, sort of like you not reading the rules. I hope you get sodomized by a pack of rabid badgers then contract leprosy and your junk rots off

OMG, I've met people like that! People so dumb that they actually reduce the IQ of the people near them, kind of like a black hole. :D

And don't knock rabid badgers. They bring a lot of energy to the party.

The idea isn't a bad one. The trouble with step-ins is that you'll need a special boot. And if such is the case then you're almost defeating the purpose of your experiment. People with hand me down boots or used boots they acquired on the cheap wont be able to partake without buying yet another piece of equipment.

I honestly think this market is nearly cornered by eBay. And no offense, but step-ins are terrible. If I were in the market for beginner gear, I'd rather find some 8-10 year old board and bindings from eBay for the same price.

Donutz, I'm not sure if you should delete this or save it forever as the poster child, shining example of how not to come onto the forum and post.

If this is his Capstone what is this guys GPA 1.6 at best.

Not Offended at all compared to the rabid animals comment. I completely agree that having a special boot would ruin the experiment, the idea is to make a design that allows for majority of snow boots to fit (the board is entirely one piece).Maybe our team will a head different direction especially if eBay is covering that price range so well. Although i do believe there is a large group of people, whether it be parents getting presents, or people with impulse buys, that don't want to have to out bid someone or go to a strangers house and rather go to a sporting goods store. Good to get a legitimate response, it helped. Trying to go to forums for help was obviously a bad idea, I did have good intentions thou. I was wasn't trying to be commercial, nor break the rules. If I had just said I had a class that was asking us to design something and I was looking for some help (which is the truth), nobody would have said it was wrong but as soon as I add numbers and the word market everybody gets concerned about the rules. Sorry for wasting your time lol

Let's be honest fuck-o, your intentions were to get others to do your homework for you, because you decided to choose a project/product you have zero knowledge of, as demonstrated by what you have typed. If I had to guess your end hope is an "A" though a more realistic assessment suggests "C-" and maybe a product you can make some money on, by using the ideas of others as you lack both creativity and original thoughts.

Your trying to tell me that asking for help is the wrong thing to do. My goal is an A your right (realistically it won't be sold because its not 100% novel, I know) but don't assume you know every persons intentions, mine are neither greedy nor hateful (unlike yourself) and how is a person who wants to learn about boarding suppose to learn none other than riding and asking questions.

Can't we just accept that I don't like you and you don't like me and stop commenting on this page. Prove me wrong, that u truly are the bigger, better man. I'll stop if you will

1stly

For people that participate in this sport, money is not really an issue, certainly not for the majority anyway, and to achieve what you are doing, you need to cut costs so significantly that you would make a loss, no matter what you come up with...

2ndly

Step in bindings already exist, just look up FLOW to start with, they are step in bindings... Very simple, for use anyway, very comfortable, proven to work, and about 4 times what you are hoping to achieve in terms of cost, and as there is not actually that much profit in hardware does that not answer the cost issue...

3rdly, NO ONE CARES...!

Even if you could come up with something, even half decent, it would never take off, budget is budget for a reason... That is normally cos it's crap... And my life is worth $300 for a set of bindings over an $80 set that in all honesty would be seriously inferior for that money...!!!

The first rule of the forum should really be "thou shall not bring up step in bindings or you shall be fed to the dogs" but damn it if it isn't always entertaining to watch.:yahoo:

OK so I've said my mind and now I'll try to be constructive for you.

You'll need to design some sort of fast adjustable channel system to be able to adjust the width of the bindings mounted to the board. As you know every persons stance width is different. With this premise you will also need to be able to adjust the angles. In-Toe & Out-Toe vary greatly and will need to be able to have adjustments.

Clam Shell? this may be a good exercise in engineering to design a way to step down on the binding and have it clamp around the boot to secure it. This will also need to be adjustable to account for differing boot widths and bulky boots. The adjustment will increase/decrease the pressure to secure the boot. Not sure how this would hold in real resort conditions but as you mentioned: golf courses, sledding hills, back yards etc...who knows

There are a ton of adjustability and unknowns that need to be considered here for this to work with the general population. IMO you may have picked a topic that requires way more research, design, and marketing that could ever make it a practical item. This is a academic project with no real world implications and many many assumptions. I think you should run with it.

*** Maybe take the time to read the rules and post a pic you in the engineering lab or physics lab at your college. You and your buddies riding snowboards, maybe crashing maybe pulling off some sweet trick off the park jumps. Just saying, make your plea to those that see you as a fellow rider not a troll looking for easy answers ***
