board size recommendation

Depends on how you want it to ride really. There really is no correct size, only recommended size by the manufacturer based on how the board is intended to ride.

Lots of factors to consider here, What are you looking for in this board? Is it your only board? Are you a beginner? Advanced? Size shoe? Weight? Provide those and you'll give more experienced members on here something to work with. I'm sure the size suggestions will start rolling in shortly after that.

IMO the SL is just a resort board, not bomber enough to be a true all mountain board, but too directional to be freestyle. There are more aggressive boards in the NS lineup if you're into charging more difficult terrain.

If you're looking for something park friendly go with the Proto. Similar flex to the SL just with a centered stance which makes it 10x better for riding and landing switch. I'm 6' 185and find the Proto 157 is best for ripping and jumping. It handles resort riding just as well as the SL does.

If you're set on the SL there's no reason to size down, 158 all the way.

well im still starting out, groomer runs, carving/charging is what i will mostly be doing for now, with some basic jumps.. however the terrains are mostly beginner/intermediate

I think you could/should go for the 158. I started this year and I'm 135 pounds and learned on a 155. Given, you could take the 155 and it would help you pick up snowboarding faster, but since you want to do a lot of all mountain riding, the 158 would suit you better in the future.

EDIT: Just wanted to clarify that I did not learn on a 155 NS SL. I learned on a 155 Rossignol noodle so it would be a bit more forgiving than an SL presumably.

Some more experienced boarders will (hopefully) chime in. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm thinking for my weight, probably. For your weight, no. Don't take that personally though

Yes 3cm of effective edge makes a huge difference especially on a RC board. It already rides loose as it is, at 185lbs you'll want the stability of a 158. The only reason you'd want to size down to a 155 is if you're were going to do ride park, in which case you wouldn't want the SL to beging with, you'd want the Proto.
