Downtown Denver for New Years?

3215 Views 19 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  mjordan
Hey guys! I'm going to Winter Park with my university January 2-7th this year. Trying to fly into Denver on December 31st and stay downtown for new years eve. So I'll probably be going back to the airport on the morning of the 2nd and taking Home James shuttle to the resort.

We're all 21, so any advice on what hotel to stay at and what bars to go to near downtown? Preferably somewhere within walking distance or a short cab ride. And I'm not interested in any fancy parties or anything, just want a couple fun bars/clubs to party at that don't have an outrageous cover charge or weird dress code.

Staying just about anywhere Downtown is good. The Sheraton, and Comfort Inn are walking distance to the 16th Street Mall. From there you can take the Mall Shuttle to where ever. Pretty much all the action is going to be on the Mall or a block or two off of it. The Hilton and Westin work too of course.

You might just want to look here.

Plenty to do, everyone will have an opinion. There really isn't a wrong choice.

Thanks for the quick reply! Exactly the info I needed. So I definitely want to stay within short distance of the Mall. Now to just find an affordable hotel to split between 4 college students....

Anybody know about travel from the airport to downtown? Is there a free shuttle or do I need to take the greyhound? And is there any other cheaper shuttles than Home James so that I can get to Winter Park?
If you're not renting a car, probably the cheapest and best option to get downtown is to use Super Shuttle. They run about $20 and will take you right to the door of your hotel.

You are a goldmine of info for me. Thanks!

Not sure if you know about Winter Park, but any info on local restaurants or bars that we should check out while at the resort? We're staying slopeside in the Fraser Crossing condos.
Hmmm, not sure where the Fraser crossing condos are. If they are slopeside though you have to be at the Winterpark base area. There isn't a whole lot going on there but enough to get your grub and drink on.

The Derailer bar is an almost Legendary ski bar. It is on the Winterpark side by the Eskimo express lift. I think it's still operating. I haven't had a pass there in six years since I mostly spend my time at Berthoud Pass now. The Cheeky Monk in the new village area is decent. There is another bar/restuarant by the Zephyr express lift too. Which might be right where you condo is.

Another place to check out is Pepperoni's on the Mary Jane side. Good lunch spot and apres ski. There is a trail you can ride to get back to the Winterpark side if you are there after the lifts close. It is a little flat in spots, so expect some skating, but it's easy. Pepperoni's has reasonably priced pizza by the slice and decent beer on tap. If you join the mug club, they will fill your 20oz mug for the cost of a pint. They will hold onto the mugs for you and bring them out when you return. Of course you can take them with you if you think you are never coming back. I have a couple there, I need to stop in this season and get them to dust those off.

In the town of Winterpark the Winterpark Pub is a good locals spot to check out. The Crooked Creek Saloon in Fraser is a great dive bar and has decent dirty spoon food.

Check out airbnb. I'm gonna be there 12/30-1/1 for the Decadence NYE music festival and found a bunch 2 bedroom apartments either right in downtown or less than 20 min walk that are much nicer than a hotel room and usually cheaper (at least when it's split among a few people).

Mind PM'ing me some info about those apartment? Some hotels we're looking at are around $150-$200/night for two beds but not right downtown.
Pizza Pedal'r for......pizza, Lime for some happy hour frozen margaritas and the new liquor store at the base......can't remember the name.
In Winter Park theres a place that does taco tuesdays. Pretty fun bar. Most of winter park is spread out, so it's not like a town where all the bars are walking distance from each other. The pizza place there is famous too, sorry I'm blanking on names. They have stappled dollar bills all over the joint.

Plus fucking one on Pepporoni's, the people there are dope. This one lady always took care of us and hooked us up fatty. My buddy has like 5-6 mugs there. She used to charge us for like 4 beers when we had 8, or would toss us the end of a keg when it was running low, or buy us a shot when it was slow, etc. Sit AT the bar, not in the seating area. Way better experience.
Pepperoni's has been pretty hit or miss for me.

When it's good, it's good. But there has been more than a couple occasions when I was severely disappointed. Plus, I think they were having issues with one of their pizza ovens last year.

Oh I don't give two shits about the pizza. I go for the beer and the people.
Yeah I am not really commenting on how good the pizza is. I'd call it mediocre. Some of the better beer deals at the resort are had there though.
Good to hear about the Pepperoni place. Will definitely check them out for drinks. That mug deal sounds awesome.

If I could remember my mug number I'd tell you to use it. Might as well let someone enjoy it. If I remember, I'll let you know.

Ok thanks, just let me know!

Hernando's......with the dolla bills.
Went to Winter Park last year for NYE, it was bomb. Make sure you hit the bar at the bottom of Mary Jane for the Mug club speciel, I think it was at 4pm everyday. Met some friendly locals and the bartenders were dope, gave me the "employee" discount.

Cheers
