Help! My first snowboard. Is this used Burton custom a good deal?

Hi,

I really want a Burton custom. I also want a camber. I've been riding some trash flat board I got for real cheap but I feel it's time to step up. I live on the east coast, and I can do blue's fairly comfortable and diamonds with some ease/difficulty at times. Anyhow I found this Burton custom online for 225 used, it's a 2016 I believe, and I want you all to let me know if this is a solid deal or not. I think it is, but I'd like to get some opinions.

Looks to be in decent enough shape, though tough to guage the base from these photos. I'd try to bargain down a bit. See if they'll bite around $175. Worst they can say is no.

This is a 2014 Custom 58 for $US225. A new '22 Custom is $US629.95 RRP. So this board is running at 36% of the new price.
This board has been a beaten around a little and looks like it hasn't been kept in a board bag. The top sheet has a fair few scratches and edge chips. In the end a board is really worth how much someone pays for it whilst also priced alongside the cost of rentals. The Custom is a brilliant AM full cambered moderately stiff board.

I recently grabbed a new delivered '22 Custom on the EOS sales down here in Australia for $US398 thanks to Covid shutting down the Mountains for most of Winter.
Yeah it’s a good deck and will serve you well on the east coast. But I would haggle. Not worth asking price for a board that well used.

Ok I negotiated it to about 175. Worth it?

Yeah he's willing to do 175
If the base is okay as from the pics it looks reasonable. You can polish up top sheet and it might hide a few of the scratches however I'm not that knowledgeable with US 2nd hand prices. I worked it out and it's $Au225 so that's a pretty good price for a 2nd hand '14 Custom.

Ok got it. And will my regular Burton mission bindings with 4 holes work on the EST board?

Yes as long as the discs look like this or can make up this positioning for the screws. Burton should send you them for free if you email them and show your set up.

I wouldn't pay more than half of his asking price. Sorry but it aint worth more than 125. You have a ton of other board to choose from just by looking a Facebook marketplace or buy and sell groups.

Links?

At $US175 he's paying 27% off the full RRP @'22 Custom for a reasonable condition used '14.
Everyone is after a good deal but you're suggesting $US125 (20%).

In Australia it's $Au180 to hire a board/bindings for 5 days peak Winter. He already has the bindings so it's a pretty fair deal. He will hardly lose anything on the outlay of this board even after a few years riding.

I bought a first year Skeleton Key ridden one day for 1500kr/$170 or a older buy brand new Sleazy Rider of eBay for the same amount.
There is always deals to be made.
Too expensive at 225. I would definitely ride that though.

I wholeheartedly agree but not everyone wants/has time (and for some it's not worth it either) to scour the web for those and many many first-time buyers don't know what to look for.
Unless some friends (or us) are willing to hold their hands through the process or do the research for them, they don't find the same great deals that we do as easily.

Buying gear at the start of a season, you are never going to get a good deal. You are probably going to have a tough time finding what you need too. Between supply chain issues and snowboarding being flooded with new people it may be difficult. Yeah that is a good board, yeah it's overpriced. But you are probably going to end up overpaying on something because you're buying it weeks before everything opens up and people know there are desperate people out there who need a board and will pay. It's not just snowboarding, it's everything. Other winter sports get more expensive in fall and summer sports get more expensive in the spring. Next time be more astute and buy your gear on sale at the end of the season or get a head start in august or september.

I was looking for snowboard boots in August because I was concerned I wouldn't be able to find them. I bought from Evo in august and they had a ton, now they are saying there's only 3-5 in stock in the size I bought. Those are gonna disappear once stuff starts opening up more.

My advice is just to spend the extra $50 or so just to secure the board for this season and not make the same mistake next year.

For the astute there is always a chance in tripping onto a great deal. I while ago I grabbed 2 pairs of Volkl skis, poles, boots for $Au120. I did a full clean/service/wax on them and sold them for over $Au1200. I knew it was a good buy. I've done this with numerous other boards and ski as well but in the end he's getting a 7 yr old Custom which is a upper end board in okay condition. I perused a few US snowboard outlets and they are renting out at around $US40-50 a day for a board/bindings so 5 days hire would pay for this board.
It'll treat you well for $175. Not a great deal, but not terrible either.

175 is a fair price. Anything more than that it's not worth it. Grab it you won't regret it for what you're looking to do. Just be sure to tune it well including a good hot wax and sharpening edges.

What year model are your missions? The 4 hole pattern disk will likely not work with this board. If you have the other set of disks that likely came with it use those... Of not contact Burton I bet they'll send you a set otherwise it's less than $6 and shipping is free and fast on burton.com for the correct disks.

So I ended up getting it for 175. There is a bit of a gash underneath. Doesn’t look too deep. How bad is it is?
My mission bindings are probably 4-5 years old. What am I looking for specifically to get my bindings to work with this board?
