I've been to Rusutsu, Niseko and Furano. I like Furano as it's close to a reasonable sized township so you can walk down and get groceries. Has a 101 person ropeway. You can do day trips to Kamui and Tomamu as well. Rusutsu is really good but it's a little by itself. You can get bus trip from Niseko. Had some awesome powder days at Rusutsu. Great runs as well.

Are you going back to Japan next year?
I'm looking at retiring early next year as work is offering a fairly decent disengagement package. Consequently I'm saving all my leave to add into the package. So I was aiming at '24 as my kids are about to start jobs out of Uni next year so will be available with both their boyfriends/girlfriends who are also keen for Japan in 24 .

I don't speak Japanese at all and I have never really needed to, so don't worry about that.

Niseko, Rusutsu and Kiroro are all on the north island of Hokkaido, I've been to all of them, in fact they are pretty close to each other, maybe 1 hour by bus apart. Niseko is a good mountain with plenty of terrain and high snowfall but it doesn't really feel like you're in Japan, I could imagine 15 - 20 years ago it was an amazing place.
Rusutsu is one of my favourite resorts, probably had the best powder day of my life there. Other than the resort though there is absolutely nothing there, same with Kiroro actually.
Kiroro is a bit flat, worth a day trip or two but wouldn't want to be there too long.

Lotte Arai is back down on the main island of Honshu, same with the Hakuba Valley. Lotte Arai is a really good resort in terms of snow and terrain but other than that its just a big luxury hotel. We did day trips there from Myoko but I wouldn't want to stay there more than a week at most.

I think if you split your time between Hakuba Valley and Myoko you would get to ride a lot of different resorts and get a good cultural experience.
Agree...., that's why we like Furano. It's walking distance to the main CBD not as touristy as Niseko, however nowhere near as big. Niseko is a pretty big resort in it's entirety and gets really good falls almost daily though in peak Winter...., but it's like that a lot in Hokkaido.

If you do head over to Japan there is a T.J Brand store in Hakuba, Moss Snowstick in Myoko and a Gentemstick in Niseko. It's always nice to fondle the boards but the prices have stopped me buying so far, I usually leave my card in the hotel just as a precaution ;)
Yep most of the Retail outlets in the past I went to in Hokkaido, Japan just browsing at Snowboards and outerwear I found they were a lot more expensive than full Aussie RRP....., and that folks is already a shock to the system.

Pre-rego'd with the Visit Japan site as well. Seemed straight forward, albeit too many questions IMO. Funnily enough it simply didn't like scanning my kids' passport images for some reason 🤷‍♂️

By the way, does anyone know if leashes are mandatory for snowboarders at Japanese resorts? I was browsing the Rusutsu site before (Trail Map - Rusutsu Resort Hokkaido Japan) and it seems like they are?
Never had leashes for the last 15 years I've been there at any resorts: Niseko, Furano, Kamui, Rusutsu, Tomamu. They also have an additional extra 1000yen ($Au10 approx) since introduction of electronic lift passes but you get that back when you hand the ticket in at the machine each day etc.

You should be able to get a bus there I would hope but definitely doable for a day trip only 30min away. Amazing tree skiing everywhere, slopes a bit flat
I've always caught the bus to Rusutsu from Niseko. From memory, pretty sure you book at the bus terminal. It gets there earlier and leaves shortly after the Lifts shut down in evening. It is a good idea to have a bag for your board as they throw all the skis and snowboards underneath the coach and they get thrown around a little and get scratched against other ski/boards. There are cheap lockers at Rusutsu to store your gear in whilst you ride. Everytime I've been to Rusutsu it's been absolutely epic powder conditions so it's cemented a deep emotional affection within. The Mountain and terrain is really really good and some superbly nice powdery tree runs.

Looks like I will be in Niseko the second week of Jan. It's off the tail end of a work trip to Osaka and Sapporo, but I was surprised I could find deals in December. My travel companion who is paying for lodging has never been to Hokkaido and wanted the busy touristy spots so I obliged by booking in the middle of Grand Hirafu. The trip is practically free for me so no complaints.

Still, I am not much of a crowd person so I fully expect to run off to Rusutsu at least a couple of times. On getting to Rusutsu, if you can find a companion, sharing a cab may also be an idea. If solo, bus it and save the money for food and biru.
We've done both cabs and buses from Furano to Kamui (about an hour each way). We got friendly with our Japanese accommodation Manager and he was able to get us a cab to and home for close to the same as a bus with the 4 of us (around $Au200 total ($US130)). It's weird as you come off the Mountain after riding all day and the cab driver is waiting in the car park for your return. We only paid when we got home at the end but you're still semi nervous about getting stranded on the Mountain with no lift..., but you forget it's Japan and they're confidently pretty damn reliable.

Speaking of waxing , does anyone bother bringing their wax kits to Japan ? I just pay 3000 yen but I feel like I can do a better job than some of these Aussie shops. They even left plenty of black stains on my brand new white top sheet!
the usual Japanese shop I go to were either closed or stopped waxing boards that are not their rentals.
I have a 120v ToKo T8 as well and I take over a small tuning kit to Japan. We normally go for 2 weeks and I re wax half way through the trip. It's powder so not overly abrasive like what we get here in Oz. I do it because I have the gear and you have to factor in the iron weight into luggage as well. It's okay when we have a few of us going as we share the entire luggage weight together.

Spot on, floats well but today I wish I had a bit more setback on it but apart from the real deep stuff it's great to ride, got a real Surfy feel to it through the powder. There were so many riders that couldn't make or were struggling to make some of the flatter sections on the runs and cat tracks through powder but the Dada just flew past them, the only issue I had was when I ventured off the lift area and hit the waist powder with little speed and stopped. Didn't need to unclip though, just a few pushes forward and I was away again.

Kanko didn't even open today, we cut morning laps over what was open around Onsen but we're going to call it quits after 4 hours and head over to one of the bars that's running a JJJ Hot 100 party all day 🍻

Great powder conditions but because there was so much snow and still falling hard, half the lifts couldn't open, wish that had lift status boardsat the ticket office.

I've booked Sugi again, hoping that'll be great again after a big dump and either way the Gondola should run.

So blessed to get these conditions and experience a true Japow winter trip.

God..., you'd be clearly in trouble without a powder board there at present.

does anyone here use a camelbak or other backpack with reservoir in japan?
Im from aus and i use a normal camelbak but it doesnt get cold enough to freeze.

im guessing a normal one would freeze in japan niseko snow?
You have to fight the mouth piece/hose freeze with blow back even with an insulated hose.

Can confirm. Every previous attempt I went out with my insulated mil-spec hydration kit, the hose and valve froze up. This time I took a soft bottle in my jacket goggle pocket or a podium chill bottle in an insulating sleeve in the backpack and both worked flawlessly.
Yep that is the best and safest option. You can get back packs as well that have small bottle pocket to the side as well.

Yup, also difficult to tell just how fast you are going on clean powder. Even going down deep chopped up powder if its steep you are kinda committed to just holding on and getting to the end I often find. Couple of pics from the last 2 days at Shiga Kogan. I let me skier mate have a go at some deeper powder, he is not doing it anymore he reckons after finally digging himself out lol
Today I just left a run to check out some powder on the edge of a groomer that I have been bombing down for days, hit some random icy patch that kicked me right, did a tumble turn and ended up somehow hitting a tree with, fortunately, the back of my head, a full 3.5m from where I lost it. Still can't work out how I even got there. Thats twice in about 7 years I have needed a helmet btw and I have done hundreds of tight tree runs etc but shit I was lucky. Thats about how often I have needed my wrist guards also. It's not the things you do that actually are dangerous that get you I find, its pissy things you don't rate.
Gee Myoko, that first picture is a nice shot over the tree line. Is that blue outfit a one piece?

Yup, I love it! Only problem is you need to lift your hands up so you can bend down easily and do your bindings....and if you end up on your ass its actually hard to get up Oneskee UK
80/60g fill weight, Lycra wrist gaiters, 25k nice. Looks the best colour of the range. I see they have a rear zip opening for toilet. Does the front central zip come down far enough to go for a piss.

I'm in Bali right now actually transiting home, been here a dozen times but not for years and really know why I hate this place.

Cost me 500,000 and a couple of hours just to walk from the arrivals, collect my bag and check-in again and add to this another delayed Jetstar flight!

@JDA enjoy yr trip, no doubt it'll be epic. Good to see the Aussies getting plenty of the Northern hemisphere powder this season, long time overdue.
I remember seeing a Documentary where David Attenborough said Bali was the best Country he'd ever been to back in the old days pre-commercialism and Tourism.

On way to niseko and forgot to bring my walkie talkies although apparently foreign ones aren’t allowed anyway?
Anyone know where I could buy one in the niseko area?
Also is Fatmap the best app to use for backcountry routes etc?
I haven't been to Niseko for a few years but there is an electrical/electronic type store I've been to in Kutchan just east of Railway Stn. I tried to find it on map but was not able to. We used to always bus it to the Co-Op next to Railway Stn to do our grocery shopping. There would be something like that around there. You could check with the accommodation staff when you're there.

Found them, they have moved:
