Riding buddy left today so headed out solo. Headed over towards Kanko in the morning for some steep powder runs, they're a massive workout on my legs so after decided to head back towards the far west area of Onsen. Found some really cruisy mellow powder runs which kept me occupied for a few hours before heading back for an early Onsen.

Great day, although I'm not sure if I'm a fan of riding solo much.

Had the Surfari out, handles the powder so well and is a dream to ride through those heavy powder lines. In fact it might be sold so may not even bring the board back to Aus.

Are you going to buy a different pow board?
Yeah I think so. I put both the Dada and Surfari on Myoko Buy,Swap,Sell FB page and there's a bit of interest. A guy from Hakuba wants the Surfari but needs to get here. I'm happy to keep them but would also be keen to try a more mellow carver/powder board thats a little easier to drive. Not sure what, maybe the Dart or PeaceSeeker, SP/NP just not sure.

Bruising starting to come up now, painful and uncomfortable to ride with. On day 1 of all days.

Got any arnica or (over the counter) heparin cream (Hirudoid)?
Assuming no medical contra-indications, The heparin cream would help clear the old blood, post onsen soak, of course...
Arnica is generally better soon after the injury occurs, as an astringent to partly reduce swelling, along with ice packs.

Do you want a new friend? Because that's how you get new friends. For real though I might be heading to NZ Queensland in the summer of '24 for a month to ride their mountains for the first time.

I followed you onto a Surfari maybe you want to follow me on to a Stale Fish before the design changes.

Day 4 on new boots, already massive heel lift on my back foot. You know I tried on 6 pairs and this was by far the best fit but its shit already (boot fitter assisted at Snowbiz btw). Almost like I need a shin pad or something also as its pretty much on max already as you can see by the picture. Left one is fine but obviously doesn't work as hard. No boot fitter anywhere near Shiga Kogan or Madarao where I am going next. Might try an extra pair of thick socks over the top and if that doesn't work maybe put something under the heel. Had so many pairs of snowboard boots and never had this happen so quickly. Sometimes when you live 1000 klms away from the snow you don't get the chance to try dozens of shoes. Apart from that, plenty of powder and few to share it with so can't complain

I think there's a boot fitting shop in akakura onsen, joey's custom bootfitting. there is a bus that travel between madaraokogen and akakura onsen.

which 32 is this? was thinking of retiring my ride lasso and trying out 32. last time i tried in the shop, the heel hold felt good, that was 5 years ago. i remember they had a strap going across the lining. kinda drawn in to that atm, i feel like there is too much "give" on the top of my boot/inner lining, despite cranking up. it could just be it's old, worn out and softer now

You can try soccer shin guards between your liner and shell, but really any relatively low compression material should work.

Did you buy a Dart, or are you perving at a wild dart. I assume that's your surfari with the supermatic (?) bindings.
Perving! Those that know, know. Someone's just added a Moss Snowstick to it now. It's a tasty rack at the moment!

I was going to ask the Korua service store at the bottom of Sugi if they had a Dart to demo actually, good conditions here ATM.

No idea what 32 it is i'm sorry, my last few boots have been 32 so they seem to fit my foot for some reason. Thicker socks and putting something underneath my footbed helped a bit and Strapins at the top to sort the gap out. I don't care what boot you have, you will have a gap at the top sooner rather than later

Careful out there everyone smashing the Japow, there have been avalanches taking out people in the back & side country around Nagano region, apparently. Looks like it was in Hakuba valley.

Having a shovel, probe and beacon ( and knowing how to use them properly) is still no guarantee of survival.

Honestly I just don't think its worth going in the trees as the base is not high enough and there is powder everywhere just off runs. I can see the tree runs here at Shiga, but needs another 1m to cover all the crap. I'm way too lazy to hike also should be fine this trip. Not good news though :-(

Probably one of the best days I've ever had, wasn't super deep but good powder all day. Long runs at Suginohara, vis was down as it was dumping but felt like the Surfari was right at home in those conditions today, there's a confidnence of riding that board when Vis is down in that it handles chopped out terrain so well.

Still dumping, last day tomorrow and tossing up between Kanko, Ikenotaira or possibly Sugi again as I'm falling in love with those long runs.

Today my body loosened up and let me use the hips more and wasn't as stiff and as upright as I'd been for the last couple.

1 day left riding 😭😭
