Japan Stoke Thread 2023

If you didn't know, all restrictions to enter Japan have now been lifted.

Who is going?
Where are you going?
Have you been before and where?
What board/bindings are you taking?

I can't believe I'm actually going, if you asked me 4 weeks ago we were holding off until 2024 but now myself and 3 other mates have already booked our flights and accommodation for the first week of Feb 2023.

This will be my 7th time to Japan, I've been to around 30 different ski resorts already in areas such as Hakuba, Myoko, Fukushima (Bandai), Yamagata (Zao Onsen) and several resorts up on Hokkaido.

This trip I have 2 first timers coming with me and the only way I could convince them was to keep the trip reasonably short and inexpensive. So we have 7 days on snow in Hakuba Valley and we will be getting 5 consecutive days of lift tickets for free with our Epic pass. We are staying right next to the gondola at the base of Tsugaike Kogan ski resort.

I am taking my Salomon Dancehaul 152 with Now Drive bindings and my Korua Dart 156 with Ride A-10 bindings. Both boards should be good in powder with the Dancehaul having a softer more freestyle focus and the Dart will be great for carving.

Do you follow AFL or NRL?

If so get onto SuperCoach and just spend the next few weeks researching and putting together a team. Hell, I'm supposed to be working and I'm doing that anyway 😂
No I've never been into any ball sports. I'm actually not much into spectating at all, even the sports I participate in I'm unlikely to go watch someone else do it.

What a nightmare, I feel for you mate and hope it gets better soon. Maybe you can do some swimming? Yes, I also found out the hard way they don't give pain medication and are quite happy to manipulate something that is seriously torn. A tip, as this is what got me through. You will be given maybe Endone or something for your operations. If you don't need it don't take it (addictive) BUT hang onto it. So many years old but I had it with me in Japan thank god when I needed it the first night and will always travel with it, just in case. Shit really does happen, and it's never when you think.

Pretty risky bringing endone to a strict Asian country. If you didn’t have a permit then you’ve been lucky but if they happen to do a spot check…

Does your prescription involve narcotics?
If your prescription medication involves the use of narcotics (eg morphine, codeine, oxycodone, pethidine, hydrocodone), you must seek advance permission from one of Japan’s eight Regional Bureaus of Health and Welfare.

You will need to submit an import application form as well as supporting documentation at least 14 days before traveling to Japan.

Many common medications and over-the-counter drugs in the United States are illegal in Japan. It does not matter if you have a valid U.S. prescription for a medicine/drug which is illegal in Japan: if you bring it with you, you risk arrest and detention by the Japanese authorities

You’ll also need a doctor’s letter to support you bringing them in. Not sure bringing endone “just in case I might need it” will make the cut… sorry to be the party pooper…

100%, which is why it's important to submit all the relevant paperwork, and talk to your GP about a doctor's letter to show Japanese customs and Police.
Customs will probe you on arrival, but it's way better than being forcibly probed or worse by the japanese cops if you don't have the right paperwork/permits.
Wow did not know that. I usually keep it in the box it came in with my details but this time just took the packet. Odds would be ridiculously low as I have done this all over the world for a very long time but it’s a possibility by the looks of it. Maybe I have just been lucky

It’s japan, they love regulations and paperwork, especially hand written paperwork lol. Can you believe it, 2023 and I still have to send paper mail in Japan lol.

you probably won’t get hanged for this but it would suck if your passport gets flagged for future trips or your trip/ travel crew got delayed by a few days because of this.

I've only had endone twice since I've been here in the hospital. Once before they were going to lift me into the CT scan when I first arrived and once straight after my first surgery.

Other than that I'm on a constant Panadol and Nurofen rotation as I don't think the pain is bad enough to require endone and I am well aware that you can become very dependent on opioid based medications.

If Panadol & Nurofen smooth things out enough, then go with that, for sure.

People can develop a tolerance to opioids, but it "shouldn't" be a problem for a short period.
Doctors wring their hands a bit about opioids but they are useful for pain relief if used in a targeted manner, for 8-11 out of 10 perceived pain levels , like a twisted bowel, fractures etc
I have seen people in hospital turn blue from excessive opioid dosing, but it's usually if they are on a morphine drip, or automated delivery system that gives a certain dose every 2 hours and the like.

Panadol does 2/5ths of FA for me, and Nurofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds are contra-indicated (for me). Going through the BS in hospital where I'm offered Panadol first is tedious and a waste of time.

Whenever I go to the dentist for a filling or a crown, they have to inject enough local anaesthetic in my gums to knock a Rhino on its arse.

I don't have an opioid habit or anything, it just takes more pain relief meds to take the edge off for me.
If I don't need them, I don't take them. That's the bit that doctors don't always comprehend, IMO.

Wow that can be a very serious injury. I've seen people loose their legs from such an injury (usually from lack of blood supply to the lower leg). A knee dislocation is never taken lightly. To see that you didn't receive definitive care for 36 hours + is unreal, and that they tried to manipulate it in the clinic to get better alignment is also unreal. Sorry you had to go through all of that. Makes me think twice about traveling and about the "crazy shit" I do sometimes! Hope you are on the mend soon!

Let's bring the stoke back, I just put together the video of the morning before my accident. You can see it was a great morning, lot's of powder and relatively clear skies.

It's great, I have seven boards in my quiver and the Dancehaul has earned its place. In fact I sold my resort/park board because the Dancehaul does it all and more. For really deep powder I would probably prefer a 157 but I have other powder boards for those days. The Dancehaul is really fun to ride, has a forgiving flex with lots of easily accessible pop, great for freestyle and carving too if you keep your speed in check.

Out of interest, what other boards are in your quiver? I know you're looking at the new Aeronaut, are you looking to flip any boards.
