Japan Stoke Thread 2023

If you didn't know, all restrictions to enter Japan have now been lifted.

Who is going?
Where are you going?
Have you been before and where?
What board/bindings are you taking?

I can't believe I'm actually going, if you asked me 4 weeks ago we were holding off until 2024 but now myself and 3 other mates have already booked our flights and accommodation for the first week of Feb 2023.

This will be my 7th time to Japan, I've been to around 30 different ski resorts already in areas such as Hakuba, Myoko, Fukushima (Bandai), Yamagata (Zao Onsen) and several resorts up on Hokkaido.

This trip I have 2 first timers coming with me and the only way I could convince them was to keep the trip reasonably short and inexpensive. So we have 7 days on snow in Hakuba Valley and we will be getting 5 consecutive days of lift tickets for free with our Epic pass. We are staying right next to the gondola at the base of Tsugaike Kogan ski resort.

I am taking my Salomon Dancehaul 152 with Now Drive bindings and my Korua Dart 156 with Ride A-10 bindings. Both boards should be good in powder with the Dancehaul having a softer more freestyle focus and the Dart will be great for carving.

Zip is fine, super convenient a onsie is I am finding. Good sizing also, I'm 83kgs 180cm
Myoko v Shiga hmm
  • Shiga obviously massive with many, many very long tree runs although I thin k it would be a good idea to have a guide for a day and save a lot of time. Myoko has short tree runs but go very quickly to a lift to repeat
  • Myoko great night life, needed to book to go eat in 2020 for first time, Shiga ZERO nightlife when I am anyway at Giant. You eat here and he turns the lights out at 8,30 to you go to your room WTF!
  • Myoko much more busier than here, and its not that busy.
  • Seems to be powder everywhere here and despite what you hear, ducking under ropes doesn't seem an issue. Myoko was becoming quite strict about it
  • Basically i would rate this much, much higher the Myoko given the variety of terrain and tree runs, but forget any nightlife...thats the trade off. Myoko is warmer , more like -3 to -7. here more like average -9 from what I can tell but only been here 5 days boarding
  • cant even buy cheese or any kind of light coke for example, forget trying to buy bottle of rum or something

Happy tp be educated by someone staying more in the middle of Shiga, i'm on one end basically

I have never seen Madarao/Tangram so busy and so completely trashed EVERYWHERE as much as yesterday, in fact I will say I have never seen any mountain as trashed. Very long lift queues also, all day. All visible off piste areas (as many are now) are completely tracked out. It's a weekend, but I am seriously considering a lay day even though I have paid for my ticket and there is a fresh 15cm. Think I am getting spoiled after Shiga Kogan

Sick Video JDA and thanks for sharing! Had maybe 15-20cm today at Madarao but no way could you point your board downhill like that without eating shit anywhere on the mountain. What mountain are you on?

Looks like a great day in the powder @JDA ! Been a bit warm in Nowaza, last day today and its +3 but soooo much powder coming next few days someone should get lucky. Going to push a bit harder on this carving thing and then watch the UFC

UPDATE: now that I have turned over the page, far out the following day was terrible. Sounds like a serious injury best looked at asap. When I injured my shoulder, the insurer put me in business class and got a driver to pick me up and drive to the airport. They only did that because I moaned that I couldn't carry my board bag or sit in an uncomfortable chair which would aggravate the injury. Hope you have a safe trip home and it heals quickly :-(

No I've never been into any ball sports. I'm actually not much into spectating at all, even the sports I participate in I'm unlikely to go watch someone else do it.
What a nightmare, I feel for you mate and hope it gets better soon. Maybe you can do some swimming? Yes, I also found out the hard way they don't give pain medication and are quite happy to manipulate something that is seriously torn. A tip, as this is what got me through. You will be given maybe Endone or something for your operations. If you don't need it don't take it (addictive) BUT hang onto it. So many years old but I had it with me in Japan thank god when I needed it the first night and will always travel with it, just in case. Shit really does happen, and it's never when you think.

Wow did not know that. I usually keep it in the box it came in with my details but this time just took the packet. Odds would be ridiculously low as I have done this all over the world for a very long time but it’s a possibility by the looks of it. Maybe I have just been lucky
Just a heads up to any Australians heading to Japan. I bought this 10gig for AUD$30 delivered Japan Travel NEW Docomo IIJmio 30 days 10GB prepaid data SIM card Best Value | eBay. Travel Sim Card Specialist and it worked very well. Put SIM in when you land , wait 10min or so and you are away. That easy! Have a standard older iphone (I get the hand me downs).
