Can anyone let me know if its worth going through all the visit Japan immigration stuff? Not going for a few weeks and generally prefer the lazy option of doing nothing but this time we are landing at 6.30pm and wanting to get to Nagano same night instead of staying the night in Tokyo. I'll be doing Shiga Kogan, Madarao and Nowaza this time. Myoko is a bit busy for me these days, mind you, been going there off and on since no shop owner could speak English or any English menus so time for a change.

There are 3 main sections to complete in the process:

1) Quarantine / Passport / Covid cert
  • Provide some basic info like passport number, DOB, arrival date, etc.
  • Scan or take a photo of your passport and upload for verification. Note: I believe this part doesn't work for anyone under the age of 18.
  • Provide a covid certificate (from mygov/medicare) and upload for verification. Kids under 18 don't need to do this if accompanying adult have at least 3 jabs,

2) Immigration / Disembarkation card
  • 5 pages of basic questions like where you are staying in Japan, for how long, are you a criminal/druggie etc.
  • You get a QR code to show the Immigration officer once this bit is complete.

3) Customs declaration
  • 14 pages of questions related to customs stuff, e.g. are you bringing any dodgy shit into Japan. Seems like a lot but most pages have just one yes/no question.
  • Like above, you get a QR code for this one.

Probably seems like a lot, but I reckon it beats having to faff around with it once you land. Given it seems you might be tight on time, I reckon get it done prior to departure.

So much crap but yes, would like to get on a train earlier this time. Planning to take the Skyliner for the first time to Ueno then get a Shinkansen to Nagano.

I’ve done it online, wasn’t too bad. Although I have heard it really does depend how busy the arrivals are at the time with some travellers saying the line for the online pre-filled docs was so long that the travellers just filling in the forms on arrival were getting through quicker. For me it’s just one less thing to worry about on arrival, I’ve only got 90 minutes for a connection to the shuttle.

I hated it too. but after that it makes your entry journey straight forward. Just do plenty of screen shots as per How to save a screenshot of the Fast Track Screen
in case you don’t have internet
Don’t leave it too late. You need to upload your passport, wait about a day for system to verify before you can proceed to next step. Same with vaccination certificate. So at least 2-3 days allowance

you don’t have to fill in the paper custom declaration and entry form.
show The screen shot, they’ll give you a pink paper to show you’ve done it.
scan the QR codes to its designated station.
It’s actually pretty smooth journey for me

Leave some leeway in time if you’re travelling in the evening the same arrival day. As with every airline and airport in the world, people got fired during covid and they’re not coping well with increased demand
Last few weeks itself, friend travelling to japan with JAL got delayed by a whole day.
My current trip itself got delayed by a few hours off because we had to wait for the other guy who had 2-3 hours flight delay.

I was one of the first to leave the plane and immigration but the last from the same plane to leave the airport, because the snowboard bag took forever in haneda. Spoke to them in Japanese, they did some searching and they even thought they lost it! It got transported separately and the last to be picked up.
friend who landed in chitose had a faster experience with his snowboard.

Hopefully you probably get away with going to Nagano the same night

edit; I was probably under influence writing the above but I’m too lazy to correct the grammar lol

Visit Japan Web was cumbersome but once you have the QR codes captured, the smooth disembarkation process made it all worth while.

First day of boarding in Grand Hirafu and the conditions were less then ideal. Puking wet snow all day in moderately warm temps made for tiring heavy mashed potato runs. Cloud or fog covered zero visibility even with the brightest lens. By noon we were all wet noodles and decamped to early onsen bliss.

When are you off @JDA

My solo trip is no more which I'm stoked about. A work mate who works remotely FIFO has some time off so is going to tag along which will be great.

Trying to find a long range forecast that I don't need to pay for to get a bit of an idea on any fresh snow 25th onwards for Myoko, anyone have a link? I imagine most will be a pay wall.

Can't wait though.

@NT.Thunder we fly out on the 3rd of Feb, the excitement is certainly building!

That's great news about your trip, it's always best to have someone with you when you are heading into the trees, plus you need to share that stoke!

I don't really trust the long range forecasts but this one goes a fair way out

This one is a pretty cool model, what you want is that dark blue and purple.

I know it's still a little over a week away but I won't lie, I'm a tad excited arriving 25th Jan
Oh this is good! I will be heading to Shiga from Nagano on the 25th also :)
I've spent maybe 6months+ actually riding kanko over the years, I've messaged you most of the tree runs as I'm not going back so am prepared to share :)

Had a bit of a board tune, wax and setup session on the weekend with one of my mates who is coming on the trip. He is taking 2 brand new boards, K2 Special Effects and Endeavor Scout, first time to Japan for him.

Got my Dart and Dancehaul all ready to go too.

Speaking of waxing , does anyone bother bringing their wax kits to Japan ? I just pay 3000 yen but I feel like I can do a better job than some of these Aussie shops. They even left plenty of black stains on my brand new white top sheet!
the usual Japanese shop I go to were either closed or stopped waxing boards that are not their rentals.
