Kijima Gerende Kata 159

I decided to pick up a new carving deck and wanted something special. In the past few years my carving decks were a Nitro Pantera 163 and Fullbag Diamond Blade 163. They were very different decks but both seemed to be a bit too stiff, the former too lively and the latter too damp. After some discussion with Kijima by IG, I decided on his carving deck. If you look at Kijima's IG page, first impressions are beautiful wood topsheets. I have to admit I was seduced by them. His new carving shape from last season is the Gerende Kata (piste cutter). It's offered in 152, 154 and 159.

Given the icy conditions the deck was intended for, I went with the 159 length. The build was a cool process with discussions along the way. I went with standard waist of 27cm but you can pick any width you like. I was looking for a long edged carver for the typical NE fast track. So I didn't want something too wide so I could maintain fast edge to edge transitions. My prior decks were a little too stiff so I was happy to have something with a little more flex. Bamboo core for a bit of pop. When I finally got the deck in the mail, all my expectations were met. It's beautiful. The black and white sandalwood topsheet is really cool looking. All bases are blue sintered. I went with color matching sidewalls. And the edge tune it comes with is top-notch. I was scraping off the shipping wax and inadvertently dragged my finger over the edge. It cut me. Fuckin' scalpel sharp! I paired the deck with Now Pilots.

My stats, 5'5", 165lb, size 9 burton photon. stance 21" +27/+9
I consider myself advanced intermediate rider, an old dude who likes to carve fast.

I finally got a few days on this deck last week. First day the conditions were the typical man made snow with freeze thaw cycles--precisely for what the deck was intended. First impressions? It did not disappoint. It took me a couple runs to get the feel of how to dance around the deck. It was an empty resort on a Tuesday--first tracks. So I was able to open it up and lay it over as much as I wanted. It has a shit ton of edge and can lay lines. I'm not a big guy and I never felt like the deck was riding me. I could lay out wide super-G turns or fast S turns. I was a bit worried about the waist width but it was never an issue with edge to edge control. And if I wanted to scrub speed here and there it was pretty easy compared to the stiffer and damper decks I have ridden in the past. One of my favorite lines to take on icy days is the 15 foot swath at the edge of the trails, where the shaved ice tends to pile up. It requires much shorter and faster turns. The torsional flex of the deck allowed me to do some back foot steering and take that line with ease.

Two days later had about 2" snow on top of the soft cement. Morning runs were a little slower but much more fun, especially when people got out of my way. I really felt dialed in. Turns do not require a ton of effort. I wouldn't say it's a playful deck but certainly not a beast. The tail has a ton of grip, so if you get too much in the backseat it won't wash out. I'm a shitty switch rider but took some turns on low angle runs at the end of the day. I have to say it was my most successful switch carving ever. I rode the deck all day each session. First day 15 runs (19k ft), second 18 (22k) and didn't feel the need to swap out. So two days in on this deck and I am pumped to get back on it.

@Scalpelman
Did you start at the standard 40 setback?
Mine felt a bit too forward so I shifted back 10
I plan on getting back on it this weekend
Yes I was at reference. It felt pretty balanced for me. I’m going to try some stiffer bindings next. Have some Rome Targas sitting around.

So I have a few more days on this deck. I decided to put some stiff Rome Targas on it. Bad decision. It removed any playfulness to the deck. Its pretty soft overall. The stiff Targa highback overpowered my heelside turns. Its also a longer highback and it felt like it was digging into my calf all day. I much prefer the lower and softer Now Pilots for dynamic carving.

Today I went out after a week of riding trees and powder in VT. It was a bit of a style switch to say the least. After the morning laps on icy refreeze chunks things softened up. Layed over deep edges without bootout. But on steeper stuff, it just wants to super G send it. It felt really stable at speed, laying loooong S turns. Thankfully it was a low crowd day. At the end of the day we stayed on lower angle terrain and this is where the deck shines. Put on some chill tunes and that groomer is your carving playground.

And the deck looks just freaking beautiful.

Man, wish I’d had a chance to ride it! It definitely looked the part for sure!
If you don't mind me asking, how much does a board cost delivered from Kajima, general ballpark cost? The fact that you ride the same mountains and conditions and the fact this board is not a stiff plank of death makes it very intriguing. I have been looking for a carving board for a long time that doesn't want to kill me if I need to go slow, or make tight quick turns, or skid off speed occasionally. How badly does this board want to punish you when your doing anything but carving?
Hit him up in IG, there are options to choose from that effect the price, but they are way way more affordable then u would expect and he is super cool

All depends on your top sheet selection and yen/dollar rate but I will say do it.
I purchased a twin and kata this time last year both are fantastic.
Yeah with my topsheet it was 88000 yen. About $670. I was able to save some money on shipping by combining with @Birddog ; probably ~$800 all in.

@Kijima ; isn’t around on this forum much but he’s very active on IG.

As far as NE carving, it holds an edge! For reference I’m 5’5” 165, size 9. Not sure how width plays into flex. Mine is 270 ww but you can go as wide as you want.

He is very responsive on IG. Before shipping mine is 88,000 yen, less the $700us
That's way more affordable than I was expecting. I was expecting double that, like high end Moss/Gentem prices. I'll definitely reach out to him. Thanks

Do you have the stiffer X version or the normal flex? In the video he posted that the QR code brings you to, they both looked relatively soft for a dedicated carving deck. I'm thinking this board in 159 is what I would get. I'm 180 pounds with a size 10 boot, so the standard 270 waist width should be good. I'll message him and see what he says. I only snowboard midweek, so I never deal with crowds and have been wanting a nice carving board to just layout carves on those wide blue cruisers with fresh morning corduroy.

I have the normal flex. It's what I wanted. I went down the stiff and damp route already. Most stiff carving decks out there seemed too much for my 165lb. I have the 270 with size 9. I wouldn't worry about the waist width scaring you away from edge to edge speed. It didn't seem to be an issue. You might want something a tad wider. Kijima will walk you through the process.
