Hey all! New snowboarder here, living a little west of Seattle. Started last january, last run was in late march. I went snowboarding at snoqualmie about 10-15 times in that time period. At LEAST once a week to snoqualmie central/alpental. I hit Crystal MT once on the snowboard, once on some rented ski's and equipment.

Just looking for some new/more people to go boarding with, I plan on going to snoqualmie about once or twice a week this season also. I go during the week and at night mostly however.

So, whats up the PNW!

I do plan on taking some trips to Crystal, Mt.Hood, and anywhere else thats worth going to!

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

Do that, don't plan a trip there.
Chances are you time it shittily.

Not every day is mind blowing.

Have your gear ready to go, then one of those nights in winter, snow will be puking it's brains out.

Get up retardedly early, and go there.

That first 25 minute run of untouched powder, will bring tears to your eyes.
You'll never want to go home.

Fo realz

You can go to the great north...a whole car load of kids under 18...but you got to have a passport, a note from the p-rents and a designated plan. As for gear, lift tickets/passes she was self-sponsored/supporting at age 15. She made choices of not having a car to shell money out for which allowed her to afford more gear and passes. Granted she was somewhat the exception compared to normal high schoolers, but she was with a group of kids that made the snowy life their commitment and made it happen. As for being the parent, my support was this..."I'm not going to say no, nor am I saying yes...but I am expecting that you come up with the plan and make it happen for yourself if that is what you want to do."

Example: At age 15 she asked for a loan to buy her season's pass because she had not saved enough $ (she had been buying her own season's pass since 6th grade)...I told her I could not afford a $500 hit and told her that she was a smart gal and would figure something out. She stomped off...pissed!!...but the following week she was all stoked and said..."dad I got my pass...I'm going to be a ski and snowboard instructor and get a free season's pass....so you can drive me up the hill on Saturdays and Sunday's." Which my response...ehmm...No...you got plenty of friends that you can catch a ride with. Anyway her sophomore year she got 40-50 days in and junior year got like 80 days. She is not an exceptional kid...but her commitment to her passion was exceptionally focused.

^ Ya, I'm grumpy geezer..but not hate'n...every year we get some youthz saying the same thing...but it is really about commitment. Iirc last year/spring it was some kid in a burb of Van BC...saying that his parent wouldn't let him, no rides...and yadadada. Well we gave him shit and told him...to ballz up and make it happen...he did...and guess what, he got stoked and discovered it was really up to him to make things happen. There are many forumites here that HAVE made the commitment... the to move to slopeslide, dirtbag a season, or just move to a hill and make it happen. So kick'n him in the ballz to wake-up and realize that he is the captain of his own ship or shit...imo is not a bad thing...and I don't care what his priorities or commitment are...that is up to him to decide. However his responses to this thread and another loooong thread are basically excuses/whines/attention seeking...instead of inquiring how/what to do to make it happen and noting the advice that was given. So just calling-out his commitment.

Rant over...dammit it we need more snow!

Edit...and if OP wants to come up for the tour (pm)...I'd gladly give him a tour of the holyland...and in all likelihood, he would in his youth be able to ride much better than I...but I don't care...it'd be fun.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

Yup, and that kid has a pass to cypress now.
He wants to be my new little side kick, haha he messages me about 90 times a week haha.

Which is all good, except I got banned for LIFE from cypress.

Another kid came on here last year wanting to know if it was possible to move from Toronto, to whistler, without any money, any connections, any anything.

I told him do it, you'll make it happen.

Few months later he was back on here saying, he did it.

He made it here. He didn't have anything, yet, found a place to stay at someone house but didn't have anything else hooked up yet.

Few more weeks go by, & He had a job at whistler.
A pass comes with that.

He had it all hooked up, except he couldn't find any ganja, haha.

That, lol I can help you with. So I did.

Not far after that, I told him to buy a Dupraz.
Never heard of em?
Neither had he, he bought a Burton fish 156, he's like 6 foot 2 & 200lbs
Haha yeah that won't work.

I traded him 2 Option snowboards for his one Burton fish. He sold those & bought a Dupraz.

I went up there about once a month & brought him some smokeables.

I brought my Dupraz & we fucking tore it up.

He lived the dream, because he believed what I told him he could do.

He left at the end of spring.
Since that day, his whole life has been about trying to get back here.

Cause it's that fuckin' good.

He's already got a place hooked up for this upcoming season.

So it's inevitable, he's coming back.
I have a feeling, now that he's 19 & old enough to get into the bars, he won't be going home after the seasons over.

Talk to people, don't be a dink, make new friends(connections) everything will fall into place.

You just gotta have some balls, believe in yourself.
It's easy once you leave your house.

JJ will be back & we'll be shredding the goods.
Look for the tall kid & the really handsome guy both riding Dupraz'

There's 2 wicked connections right there.
See how easy that is.

That just did it for me.

I've been on the fence about buying a full seasons pass to whistler, I live 4 hours away.

I had totally forgot that JJ is coming back.

They extended the early bird pass deadline until today.

Today is the last day to get a deal on a pass.

As much as I want one, wasn't sure if it would be worth it?

JJ to the rescue.
I think I'm gonna buy that pass today.

I'll have a floor to try & sleep on. Haha key word "try"

I have a feeling this is gonna be THE year for me.

Thanks for being a pussy, it reminded me of JJ and his pussyless attitude.

Without you being a whiner, I might not have remembered about him coming back.

Fuck yeah, whistler it is.

Wooooooooo
Whilst doing the Ric Flair schuffle hahaha

Not sure how it happens. I am being honest and not trying to start anything on any threads but i guess it's natural. Maybe I am an ignorant asshole.

On to the next thread though right? Not sure what category this one will be posted in or on.

you can drive to any pass, find snow and start hiking...and slide down...but have really got to have your shit together or go with someone that does...cause shit happens in the hills...like billygoats with guns and serial killers

yes the offer is good for a tour

there are tons of kids that do wwu and take winter qtr off to shred

quest is in BC ... close to whisler and they have snow bennies...there are some local kids that do that over wwu and abunch of kids end up in montana

#46 ·
I had montana on my list of places because ive heard big sky is awesome.
But im also into cars and i hate rust. So montana isnt that preferred. Im also thinkimg about places in oregon near mt hood because timberline has nearly year round snowboarding also.

To the OP: I know most of these old geezers have weighed in on your possible Whistler trip but please let this old geezer weigh-in too. When you are 17 and tell old guys you can't do something for no good reason, well those old guys freak a little because they would love to be in your shoes. With youth comes opportunities and possibilities. We aren't picking on you kid, just trying to let you know that you shouldn't be reluctant to take a chance.

I used to snowboard in Japan alone all the time. I was alone when I tore up my knee and had to get the ski patrol to take me to the hospital. Huge language barrier. Anyhow that knee story is for a different thread. Point is I lived. I didn't snowboard alone because I'm a loser (well maybe). All of my friends taught English in Japan and we all had different days off so it was difficult to ride with them. But we were all off at Christmas at the same time so we went on a huge trip to Hokkaido, super epic! Eventually I got a girlfriend and she changed her days off so we could snowboard together. Ya it was a bit quieter alone but I have awesome stories now and I wouldn't change a thing. Just put in headphones and crank the tunes! The hill I would go to had sweet hours, it was open from 6am to 10pm so I would ride all evening and get a couple of runs in before breakfast so I didn't have much time to feel lonely.

Now-a-days I'm a dad. I started riding with my family this past season and some of our friends with little kids started going snowboarding with us. I didn't even ask them they just started to tag along. Point is if you go snowboarding, people will naturally gravitate to you and want to go with you. That is the funny thing about people, they want to be around interesting and cool people. It doesn't get more interesting or cooler than snowboarding.

Grab life by the balls kid, you won't regret it!

I appreciate this. Ive been talking to friends trying to find SOMEONE that i already know who'd be willing to go up to whistler for just the day. But it seems like I need to find more dedicated riders.

And I do wanna go to the mountain myself this year some. I think before it was my lack of confidence (remember i started in january of 2016). But I remember a buddy of mine saying one of his best days of riding wss by himself because short lift waits and he could do what he wanted. Didnt have to take anyone else's opinion into consent so Im gonna give it a try

My only comment is that motocross is pretty cool to. I always sucked at it though and it was way to expensive for me to pay for myself so that sport got dropped.

Forget the guys you already know!! If they're not stoked and chompin' at the bit at the prospect of shredding wit you? They're not worth bothering with.

All,.. And I do mean ALL of the snowboarding friends I have, I either met on the slopes, or I got to know them here and we made arrangements to hook up to ride! Not a single solitary person from my pre snowboarding acquaintance has been willing to take me up on the loan of a board, a ride to the hill and a lift ticket. Not one!

If you really want some shred Fred's to hang with... Stick around, (...grow a somewhat thicker skin ) Read & learn all you can about snowboarding! you will soon find like minded individuals who want to ride.

Snowboarding is one of the few things I do where I become very extroverted and or sociable! You're not going to find me in the lodge or the bar chatting up the Gnargoyles or Tundra Wookies. But on the slopes... I'm ecstatic and a regular Chatty Cathy!! I've met a number of ppl on the lifts with whom to take a few laps. Both Guys & Gals!! Some became regular riding pals,.. Some didn't! :D

(...and very few ever jumped off the chairlift to get away either!!) :rofl2: >:)

Okay my skin isnt thick here because I simply cant hear anyones tone.

And i saw that PNW 16/17 meet up and after reading through the pages, damn it sure looks fun and I wanna go.

I hope to meet some cool people on the slopes this year! Or find some people on here that are willing to go with me. I really wanna take @wrathfuldeity up on his mt.baker tour offer and find more people on this forum. I think I may've established a reputation for myself on here by now, not nevvesarily a good one but there is one!

Bad news. Gonna have to get my new board repaired. I feel like an idiot for buying the board without properly checking it out.. oh well though I suppose. Im hoping the repair is less then $100, if it isnt then I may just sell the board and buy another.

props to @brystephor for shrugging off the guilt-trippers and geezers. I'd ride with you for sure.

My advice:

Get out there and fuckin' shred, whether alone or with friends. But work hard in school so you can make that cheddar later because snowboarding isn't cheap.

The one thing I disagree with you on, though, is that you don't need friends to snowboard. In fact, my friends that snowboard are the ones I met on here and when I travel. You'll end up meeting more people ripping by yourself because you won't be worried about the buddies you're with. Nothing better than doing your thing with your headphones on and picking your own lines without worrying if your [less skilled] friends are keeping up. :D

You sound like someone I'd get along with because that entire point of being by your self is so true. When i get music going, I get in my zone and tune everything else out. Its awesome when a song pumps you up

As for school and working hard. I have average grades, maybe slightly above average, but im ahead of others my age if that makes sense. I take college classes and have college average grades but i should only be in highschool. I have a job lined up for after college thanks to family connections thatll make me more then enough dough to be comfortable and travel to new places for snowboarding

Right now im debating between staying where im at for work or trting to get a job at snoqualmie or doing both extremely part time like 2 days a week for each.

I pay for rooms through booking or hotels, they just get his passport and credit card on check in. He has a debit card of his own through work and one CC off my account with his name on it. Hasnt been a problem. VRBO would be easier since you rarely meet a homeowner and its paid in advance....

Grab a taxi at the airport, know where your going to tell the driver in english or their language. Immediately exchange $100 for local currency at the airport if its needed.. do it at a bank or some place with good/better exchange rates for larger amounts.

They let him check in at 17 without any issues? I got told my trip to whistler for my birthday was cancelled because someone needed to be over the age of like 21 or 25 to take charge of the room. I have my own debit card with checkimgs and savings but its like the minor account of my parents. I also cant get a credit card at my age is what the bank told me even if it is linked to my parents account. Im jealous haha. I was really upset to hear the whistler trip had to be cancelled. Id totally go to whistler and pay for everything myself if the hotel rooms wouldnt have a problem with it.

Ive also only left the country once. So im not familiar on border patrols or crossings or however that works..never been to canada. I have two very little siblings (6 and 2) so, I'm on my own for about 95% of the things I do like paying for gas on my own, snowboarding expenses, any travelling expenses, anything related to my hobbies, etc.

I go to Snoqualmie if you ever want to meet up. I always ride by myself and I am probably at a pretty similar skill level.

Also I might be a bit biased but WWU is a great school (depending on what you want to study of course) and you will definitely be able to meet other snowboarders.

#70 ·
Yeah im down to meet up! Im not sure what my skill level is anymore after talking to everyone. Taking the board in for repairs today, i plan on going to snoqualmie the first weekend they're open.

Why are you biased towards WWU? Im looking for a degree in business, specifically finance or entrepreneurship.

Ive found there are alot more regulations in the US and in US hotel chains. I mean look at the average youth your in school with, the are mostly entitled brats all the way through college. Sure there are exceptions but thats the rule...

In most parts of the world they could care less. I sit around and drink in a restaurant or bar with my son here and its like I'm chopping his head off, everywhere else I am wierd if I dont offer him a beer or glass of wine. Its all perspective of what you currently know, there are 2 kinds of education and both are vital to life, unfortunately most people only focus on formal schooling. Living is another that is just as important, not just existing.... LIVING and exploring the world.

#69 ·
I havent traveled much. But the further we get in to this election the better traveling elsewhere looks. Im a weird kid, i dont have an interest in smoking or drinking. Ive been offered a beer by my mom and i just have no desire. But yeah, my school is full of very entitled children. I get a lot handed to me also but it's only the important things that are handed to me like fee's for school and book costs i dont pay my self.

Im not sure what the rest of the world is like, but in Aruba me and my 14 year old cousin went to the casino. Ive learned i hate slots. So the US does seem to have tighter restrictions

People still ride snowboards? I thought all this global warming was putting a end to it.

You WON'T be able to keep up with Argo, or his kid I would bet I rode with him for a few minutes a few times back in vail. Haha but I'm getting antsy about this season starting, I'm just having trouble deciding where I'm gonna buy a season pass. Last year I only got 2 days in and fucked my back up at work. This year I'm looking for at least 2 days a week, a looking for some one interested in chipping in for gas. I live in Everett, so it's about the same distance to both baker or stevens.

Typical days off for me are Monday and Tuesday.
