Olympics - good for the sport or bad?

I don't know if having snowboarding in the Olympics is such a good idea because suddenly there's a lot of pressure for kids and plenty of media to exploit them - besides, snowboarding doesn't need to be an Olympic sport to be cool... whatta think?

The Olympics is kind of how you know your hobby has "made it" as a sport. It validates it in the eyes of many people, and who knows? Maybe the middle class mom's will let their little kids snowboard if it's a real olympic sport!
G
Well, first of all, do only "kids" snowboard? lol
G
Ha! That's true. Last time I went I saw someone who could be my grandpa. He fell even more than I did, it was awesome. And then there was a whole family, mom, dad, and three little kids. The mom was a skiier, but the rest of them were cool ;)

I'm in favor of anything that gives snowboarding more exposure. Since snow boarding has become an olympic sport, I can suddenly find it on Cable much more than before. Of course, watching these excellent snowboarders reminds me of how little skill I really possess. :p

No kidding!

For my part, I kind of think it should be. I mean, it is a sport; why not treat it like one? As far as the media...I don't think much of them. :)

I think it should be part of the olympics. It can indeed be considered a sport after all, and it gives snowboarding some recognition other than just a hobby.

There are some odd games in the Olympics... at least this is fun to watch! What's the one where they try to slide the stones onto a target? Try watching that for hours.

hey, don't be dissing my curling!!!!

that's a wonderful sport... ancient, loved by millions and takes a lot of thought...

:)

Good point, but i think that viewers are lessening each time the olympics happen dont you think? They need as much sports in tehre that will attract viewers, and there mainly getting the kids as viewers. Lol, i have to agree with fates, the throwing stone thing..is kinda weird :D

which is harder? skiing or snowboarding?

i think its great that snowboarding is in the olympics..

its just as competitive and challenging as skiing..if not more..

or is it?
thats a great question..
which is harder.
skiing or snowboarding?

Any type of publicity is great publicity. Hopefully the Olympics will help the sport grow more and more
G
I'd say that snowboarding is harder - the number of skiers who want to "hop" over to snowboarding find out quickly enough that it's not easy!
G
That's a heck of a question, Rox. I was a skier for a long time. I think it's definitely different, and there are different aspects of each that are more difficult. I think a lot of it depends on conditions. If it's a bit icy, then I feel skiing is more challenging. If it's good powder, then I'd say snowboarding.

However, it could be that I do a LOT more skiing than snowboarding. I know this isn't the usual experience, but I get a greater thrill from skiing than snowboarding. Perhaps because I did it for so much longer a period of time.
G
Well, wish it will be a part of the olympics as I find this snowboarding exciting and full of adventure.
G
for sure i think its good for it. First of all, snowboarding deserves to be in the olympics theres almost as many snowboarders now as there is skiers. Also its a sport thats really been growing recently and the olympics help get it exposure.
G
Eh, I don't really care. I snowboard for myself because I find it relaxing from everyday life and enjoyable, plus it's a great social activity. I like watching the X-games in general, so snowboarding falls in there. The olympics are fun to watch but I could care less if snowboarding was on there or not.
