Just seen Rythmn have November shipment in for Burton gear. Big jump up again in prices. $650 for Cyclic jacket, $750 for Swash......., sit down for this one, $1K for Hover or Tusk jacket. Most up at least $50 on last year.
I don't think I could ever move home permanently to NZ now, I'd have to double my income just to afford my hobbies! I remember when I bought my first year Warpig on end of season sale, $400ish CAD. The next years model when I went back to NZ for the winter was $900NZD. I understand, smaller markets, less buying power, higher prices. But damn that one was a real wake up call.
I think this year will be awesome for EOS sales. I suspect a lot of people won't buy anything for this season because of the uncertainty of the season even happening or not. So I guess there will be much left over on the shelfs once the season ends.
I'm actually already planning to buy some stuff at the end of the season because of this🤣 I can't help it to look at the ugly side of this as well though; It is of course very bad for the industry and will cause a lot of trouble for brands that are already struggling - not to mention the resorts and everything attached to them.
Then again I already bought two pairs of pants and a board in the preseason sales🙄😅
Snow sales are already at record highs. Everything from season passes to hardgoods to softgood are all up over 30% on average. And there was a reduction in orders and production by some brands due to your exact thinking. To hell with EOS sales, the industry is going to be out of a lot of gear by mid season.
That has not been the pattern through the pandemic so far with other sports. We've seen very little advanced sales because of uncertainty but tremendous sales during the season because people have more leisure time/have to be in the office less. People also can't do as much travel so local sport participation is higher. Plus supplies are a little lower than usual because factories haven't been as productive. Bikes, Sups and surf gear had record sales this yr. And consequently massive shortages.
In fact I moved a lot of my savings to athletic companies during the pandemic and saw exceptional returns.
Though with limited capacity in the resorts maybe snow sports will break the pattern...
Yeah, I saw that as well with bike gear but that's not the same in my opinion. Biking was exceptionally popular because you don't need any infrastructure for it and can even practise it during a lockdown (well for downhill you might need a lift but mostly you don't need anything except the bikegear and good weather). I don't think this will translate to snowboarding / skiing at all. The big part of the crowd won't go skinning and a good portion of the potential customers probably won' t even hit the slopes if they can't visit a restaurant / hotel and these people most likely will not buy any new gear for a season that won't happen or will happen with a lot of restrictions.
With some extended footwork, I was able to get someone to order a set of 2021 Katanas for me (I'll call it 'done' when they're in my hand) but I still haven't been able to source the Cleaver. But they're a new binding for this year, so that may have some bearing.
Well, here in Europe they are already talking about shutting down the skiresorts before they even opened. A lot of countries are already in a lockdown again. The resorts (glaciers) in Austria have to close again tomorrow and as far as I know they are already closed or didn't even open in France as welI. I suspect Saas Fee here in Switzerland will follow soon. I just can't see anybody going "Hey let's buy a new snowboard for this season" right now... - or any gear for that matter. Nor can I see the situation getting any better until the season really (would) starts in dezember/january - and if it doesn't I guess the resorts as well as the retailers are pretty much fucked.
I think it goes without saying that if the season gets canceled or even largely canceled then there will be tremendous amount of goods leftover. Even closeouts as some companies will close. However we are working on the assumption (perhaps naively) that there will be close to normal amount of skiable days. After all, Disney world and other amusement parks managed to open despite the population being much more covid concerned this summer.
I'm picking up some crazy deals in AUS atm. Got a 2021 board off an Instagram auction where they were basically clearing their stock just above cost. Bought a new Patagonia jacket for about half price. Very close to pulling the trigger on some 2020 bindings that are about half price. Why bother to buy new season gear for RRP, so many good sales and its not required for aus / japan anyway.
If stuff sells out this year my guess would be because they made less for this year. There is still a lot of leftover stuff from last year. I don't think it will be like mountain bikes were because you still need a ski resort to be open. No doubt split board sales will be high though, and snow shoes.
As for the ops original post, aussie prices have always been insane for snowgear. Not as bad as japan at least.
A lot of pre-season sales kicking off at the moment:
Auski
Melbourne Snowboards
Generally only 10% off '22 release gear but big discounts on prior season stock.
