Finally some powder Friday.

Woke up early for this improvised pow mission day. In the car by 5, driving on empty roads and chasing other cars with boards on top. Wondering if we are driving to the same place. Powder hounds or people going to work? I'll pass them just to be sure.

I get up to Kirkwood in time for my usual parking under chair 6. It looks crowded for a Friday. There's a long line on 6, which I skip altogether and get on 5 for a warm-up run. Cutting left and in the woods. Snow feels great. 6 was trashed the day before since the rest of the resort was on wind hold and everybody was there. No point in looking for fresh lines on 6. By the end of my first run they open "the wall" (chair 10) First run of the season for me. Looks good. but nothing like 2010/11...where you would cut deep snow (10 feet? You had to lift your board to your knees to get off the chair last season) on that steep face and then just bomb it. I cut some turns, feel some rock under my edge. Rich follows me and we cut right to Eagle bowl, where some other riders are waiting for the "closed" sign to be turned. That happens as we approach the lip, so we drop it without stopping. First tracks on a foot and a half of powder. Still cold and crisp at 9:20 in the morning. A big smile as I carve large mellow turns and bear left , to the steepest part. I see another rider ended up stuck over some rocks. Avoid that section and follow the steep...point that nose down and reconnect with the traverse to get to chair 3 just open.

A quick ride takes us to Sunrise, and we get on the 4th chair. After ski patrol. No one figured the timing out apparently. I can see 3 chairs taken after us and then the line of swinging seats it's empty. Everybody is either still parking or shredding the front side. The wave is untouched. First time I see loaded this season. there's no lip. Just a big roll. Off the chairlift and skiers right to the wave...drop on its untouched face and carve a huge smile on it with my Arbor, then another the other way, effortlessly gliding over that magic white stuff I'm so addicted to...Lean back a little and let the nose rise at speed...Exhilarating sensation. twist your ankles a bit and enjoy the turn, a little Ollie here...a jump there...another turn..pump it out for more speed...Man I love this. Down the steeps keeping my speed up in the woods. following one track just left of the Ski Patrol signs...so fast and quiet in the trees. perfect cold powder. The board flies, I scan left and right but no one will cut us off. The run takes me all the way back to the lift for another run...same path. Too good to change. And now the tow lift is going. To access more powder. We get about 4 runs like that then the chair is full of people. They got the memo about the back side...but we got our tracks first...we keep riding around there until 2 or so, then fold back to the front side. squeeze our legs for some mellower runs until 3:30 and leg failure. The last few runs are fast carves on soft snow. SO fun, easy and my board feels like it is flying. No need to worry. Just enjoy.

So tired yet so stoked to ride more. But I stop one run before cramping. Good day. I got my fix finally. I'm good for a week...since all I can see in the forecast are those deadly little sun icons. No new snow until the 12th. The drive back is fast on a clean 88. But I'm already thinking about next time. Possibly on an even deeper day. Cutting the wall properly...without having to look for rocks and then right....to Eagle bowl again....Just like I did last season. Right now I'm dealing with PPD which I will cure with a dose of climbing gym. Or a beer. Or both.
