Recommendations for a begginer / first ever board

Hey folks,

I'm looking for recommendations as I'm in the process of looking around for my first board.

I've read through some of the threds on here to try and get an idea and VanillaEps thred was certainly a good read.

I'll be using it mostly on artifical snow at the Chill Factor in Manchester but do hope to progress and hit the mountains at some point. Saying that I'm very aware that I don't want to run before I can walk so to speak.

I'm pretty confident in linking turns and managing myself on the slope. I skated for year but needless to say quickly discovered that only a few elements can be transfered from wheels to snow.

I'm 5' 11 and about 160 lbs with a 10.5 U.S boot size.

I've been told boots are essentially the first thing you buy which I'll be doing at the same time so any good recommendations would be appreciated for those although I understand it's about the right fit for each individual. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

So far I've looked at the K2 Playback 159 wide, simply based on price more than anything - I could be way, way off with this as a starter board so again please advise me otherwise.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Nate

You will be hearing this a lot in any of the responses to your thread, but YES!
Boots! Boots, boots, boots!! Try on a crapload, and make sure they fit right! Then think about other gear! If the budget is tight? Still,... BOOTS FIRST!

If you've got good fitting boots, they'll even improve your rental board experience until you're ready to buy!

Having said that,... here's a site with a TON of board info. It will take a while for you to go thru and familiarize yourself with it all! Good Hunting!

Great reads, thanks Chomps. They certainly give me a good starting point. This coming weekend will be all about boots.
at 160 with 10.5 boots you dont really need and/or want a 159 in those domes. I am 6'3 210 and ride a 159 all mountain. the domes are pretty small and can get packed + features are close together, you will want something that can stay agile.

Also if anyone tells you the board needs to be between your chine and nose or something like that they are lying.
155 would be large for you.

160lbs indoor? I'd go with 153-155, no larger. You could ride a '48 if you wanted.

Smaller will be easier to learn and progress in that situation as you are basically in a skatepark without wheels.
Thanks guys, that's a big help. The rented boards I've used so far have been 160+ and felt really heavy and quite difficult to turn. I've no comparison to make this against but figured it shouldn't be that hard. Kinda like trying to drive a limo when all you really need is an SUV. I hope that's not a bad comparison :)

More like driving a bus when all you need is a Miata.

howabout that derby yesterday?!!?!

I pretty much sit on the fence when it comes to the Manchester teams, it was a great game but United look well short of what people expected. David Moyes certainly has an awful lot of work to do but panic buying Fellaini wasn't the answer. It was always going to be huge boots for him to fill following Ferguson. Oddly I am about 2 minutes walk from Old Trafford at work right now.

As for the league Liverpool (aside from this weekend) and Arsenal have thrown down the gauntlet early on so it will be very interesting.
Sadly I follow Sheffield Wednesday and we were beaten 4 - 1 away at Birmingham City. Tough times for my club.
