I hear a lot on the forums about Hood and Bachelor. What's up with the Sierra Mtn. areas like Borel, Rose and Heavenly, I haven't seen them talked about at all yet. I live about halfway between Hood and Boreal but have never been to either so was wondering why.

they're massively starved for snow and conditions are worse than the cascades have been the last few weeks.

I just spent Sunday at Sugar Bowl :) and had fun but it was icy and a lot more expensive than I thought it would be. I thought airport food was outrageous...
Never buy overpriced food at a resort. Nor beer. Bring both ;-) or stop at the liquor store before, stuff your stash somewhere in the snow... save.

I actually packed food but left it in the fridge in my rush to get out of the door. Imjust wish the resorts would realize they could make a whole lot more if they reduced the price to high but reasonable levels.

BWHAHA! We brought some friends to Tahoe with us a couple of years ago. They had two teenaged boys (twins). 17 years old. Never mind that one of them crashed a snowmobile ($$$$) and wracked up a brand new demo board in The Sisters at Kirkwood ($$$$), but they laughed at us when we packed lunch in the morning. Why bother, they said. Just more crap to carry! Where will you put it? Then they bitched and moaned at paying over $100 for LUNCH at Heavenly as their teenagers scarfed down $12 burgers off the grill.

We have the opposite problem in Vermont...there is snow, but it's too fucking cold! I'm in eastern Connecticut, and it was 6 degrees this morning. It was -12 at the BASE of Stowe a couple of days ago. Real temp, not wind chills. Mountains are actually closing, not because of lack of snow but because you'll freaking DIE out there. It's been almost too cold to even make snow! Now, it's supposed to hit 60 this weekend...can you say ICE?

I feel for my Tahoe buddies. At least us Nor'Easters can ride ice. But it's pretty difficult to ride dirt! I'll do a snow dance for you!

ROFL Ask my ex-wife. I'm cheap when it comes to food most of the time...I do enjoy a good steak out but I prefer to spend my hard earned money on stuff that lasts like new gear etc..:giggle:

Ouch. That's an expensive weekend. a snowmobile crashed? Yes, and $ 4 water bottles, $ 10 glass of beer.. The only day it snowed in Kirkwood, about a month ago, was 14 driving up, and it never went higher than 21. My wax froze, It was like riding a strip of velcro., and you could feel every bump of the terrain riding the thin frozen base. ew.

That has to suck, seeing all the mountains covered in a blissfull white blanket just to be kept in by deathly cold.

We appreciate the dance! Your cold weather should be about over.:yahoo:

Northstar's park is on point right now, it is ridiculously fun, especially for the lack of natural snow that Tahoe has gotten this year.

If you aren't a fan of riding park though....you're SOL.

Heading to Mammoth for the first time tomorrow to stay with a friend for 12 days.

I am assuming its icy in the morning and slush-fest by later in the day. Sunny days in the park are ok with me but normally I freestyle the whole mountain and hit jumps. So much for pow, guess I should work on my neglected rail/jib game.

Heavenly has great views and is a big intermediate mountain. They have some fun stuff but you have to wait for the big snow and know exactly where to go.

North Star is a giant beginner hill.

I hear lots of good things about Sugar Bowl and Sierra at Tahoe, although I have never been.

Northstar is a great place to take your girlfriend if she doesn't really ride or ski. It's essentially a giant outdoor mall with a ski slope attached. The "main mountain" (whatever they call it) is all short intermediates stuff. It can be fun in good snow, though. But the black trails on the other side are long and can be seriously fun in the right conditions. But like Heavenly, it ranks low on the "must do" list, unless you're a first-timer to Tahoe, then it's at least worth a look. The spa at the Ritz is pretty damned nice, and they even give you a blanket for the gondola ride up. But like I said, not the first choice to shred.
