Snow In The Forecast

3116 32
It's looking like it is going to snow (at least a chance) everyday in the near foreseeable future around the Loveland Pass. Snow everyday until next tuesday? I'll take it :D . 7-Day Forecast for Latitude 39.68N and Longitude 105.88W (Elev. 11018 ft) Is this a sign that the weather is finally turning for the better? :dunno: Not just Colorado, lot of the country seems to be finally getting snow as well. Maybe January is starting to look better for a lot of us.

This week and next are looking decent for snow fall. The trick is will we continue to get moisture for February and March.

I've ran into a couple of seasons with bad starts. Then it started snowing like hell in January and just evaporated as soon as the month was up. In 98, we got a few storms in Feb, but March was a doughnut. I think it was the 04 season that we got dick for February. Neither one of those seasons were as bad as a start as this one. So hopefully snow will come down consistently from here on in. At the very least, resorts should be getting close to 100% of their terrain open by the end of next week.

The storm that's hitting the West right now is sort of a meteorological anomaly, but basically that high pressure bitch that was pushing all the weather away left allowing this huge ass saturated mass to roll in.

Really, that soon? That would be absolutely awesome but it still seems like some places have quite some ways to go before they have decent enough coverage to open. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one. I have been dying to finally hit up some bowls and some hike-to off piste stuff this season.

This is why I already have a "sickness" planned for this Friday and next Monday. Planning on riding everyday Friday - Monday. Right now, I have a shade over 40 hours of PTO and I'm about to start another job. Every powder day in the forseeable future will have me feeling a little under the weather in terms of the job.

I can't see Loveland getting the ridge open by the end of the next week. I guess it could happen, but I just don't see it. That ridge needs A LOT of snow to be viable. Hell, chairs 4 and 8 aren't even running yet. I'll be happy if we can just get most of that terrain open from this wave of good weather.

Crap man, I've got close to 120 hours of PTO saved up for this season, but this is not quite good enough for me to call in sick. If we get the snowfall that is talked about, maybe after next week.

I am probably going to pull the trigger on another week in Washington for March this Thursday. Then I'll have at least one hooky day a week for Feb, plus a mini trip to Silverton or Utah. Hopefully the season will go out firing.

They fucked us this year. They changed our PTO big time. We used to get 7 personal days a year on top of our PTO and we had no cap on our carry over. They took away our 7 personal days and capped our carry over at 40 hours, so I ended up taking a lot of PTO fishing days in the fall.

I had the perfect job, but it has slowly evolved into the job from hell. Hence why I'm out.

I don't blame ya. I had a bonus 40 hours given to me, then taken away a month later. I had my suspicions, even though they gave me a letter saying it was mine to use immediately. I just held onto it waiting for the quarter to end so it was officially in the books. Other people took some extra time and are now screwed. Sure would have liked to have 160 hours to play with, but whatever.

I might be down for some hooky days next week if this weekend plays out as big as they are saying. Black Lakes on Vail pass could be an absolute blast.

The frustrating thing about this season for me is that we have been hammered with snow here in Evergreen. It sucks to have to deal with snow at home and not have a damn thing worth sliding on up on the slopes.

4x4 has been required to get out of my driveway for the better part of the last two months.

Well, if the reports come through, we are looking at around 3 feet maybe more of snow once this cycle blows through, with more snow next week. So yeah, a lot of stuff should start opening.

A friend of mine at work dug a pit last week up on vail pass. He back country boards and sleds alot up there. He is gonna wait until it slides before he goes. He said there was a very unstable rotten/sugary layer about 3.5' down. I don't know exactly where he dug the pit at. He hits these bc areas a couple times a week though during good conditios.... He has been sticking to the resorts though. He was headed out on his sled yesterday to scope it out again and see what this heavy wet snow did. He was hoping it would make it slide....

Gonna have to either slide it off or bury it deep.

Of course, it it slides, what's under it? If it doesn't take all the sugar with it, you've still got a shit base layer. Then there's the possibility of it sliding to the ground and a potential sheet of ice. That can be even worse news.

The rotten layer in most places is just under the wind slab. There is three feet of facets in spots. Of course not all areas of Vail Pass are the same. No doubt there is plenty of sketch. The place I have in mind is pretty manageable. Though I have kicked off slides in that zone on more than two occasions. They were purposely done though.
