Fear is the Mindkiller

What scares you most when riding?

Stickiest situation you've been in, and how you got out of it?

Tips for overcoming fear, etc...all fair game here

Buttchecks on take off. This past march I did one while going off a 25 ft jump, fortunately it was into water. After that I've been freaked out by trying large jumps.

texans. On the road and on the slope.

In person they are nice though :D

I like their bbq and truck sizing.
Scariest for me was the cliff we ran into in the waterfall area at wolf last winter, managed to traverse around. I didn't expect there to be anything that big!
Front side board slide on a rail and catching an edge then smack my face on the rail. Anything but the face. Lol

really dislike: overshooting park jumps to flat, hurting myself on rails...

at age 33 i now know my strengths and weaknesses and i can ride the fuck out of chutes, cliffs, cornices, natural jumps with 'infinite' landings and ride all that shit hard and aggressive without getting hurt - because that's what i'm good at.

plenty of sticky situations... usually got out of it from luck or from going faster, down the fall line. or didn't and got broke off.

tips: ride faster everywhere, all the time, even if you don't think you have to - shit will "reveal itself", ie landings are different, little bumps are now 20ft rollers/gaps.

ride fast. turn less.
i've had 100 things happen, but from last season:

there is a run here called 1000 Turns, it's basically a cattrack maybe 12 feet wide, the left side is a bank wall about 15-20 feet tall, right side is steepass trees dropping off (Teepee, if anyone knows where i mean)...anyway, the bank is full of frontside hits, probably 20 in all, so you can air and air all the way down. by about the 10th hit i guess my legs were getting tired cuz on a landing i got way too far back on it, ass on the tail basically, which of course i'm out of control and gaining speed. LOL, not good. i hit the opposite side of the cat right where there was a bit of a lip built up and just fucking launched off into the glades. This was where i got scared. midair i saw little hope, and seemed a looong time in the air, blind. i threw my board forward, intending that it 'whatever' first. landed in snow thanks the lord, tumbling and sliding right up til my edge just kissed a big, hard tree. wind knocked out of me, but 0 damage to board or person otherwise.

and yeh, erratic, unpredictable skiers are the most fear inducing, where ever they come from...i know they are the 'downhill skier' and all that, but close calls and shit happen all the time, i've had to ollie grandma's skitips on more than one occasion.

Colorado kids. The stupidest devil spawns ever. How have you people not bred yourselves out of existence if that's what you got for a gene pool is beyond me. Must be the influx of Texans.

but now you're just lashing out. I was talking about FEAR!

CO kids ARE crazy stupid!

I'm a transplant.
Tree wells. I was riding fast on a deep powder day and somehow went in feet first looking up. Snow from the tree covered me and my face. Initially panicked, but after making room to breath I managed to get unbuckled, dig myself free and climb out. Took a while, but all was good.

on bachelor even worse are the fumaroles and other volcanic pits that can be covered by a dusting and turned into a perfect tigertrap. there are a bunch on the redline run off to the left and ontop of the little ridges... i've fallen into one before that was neck-deep. landed flat on my base on lava rock... fucked my board up but if i had crashed it would have been off to the hospital for sure.
Glade tree strikes.

I am afraid of any normal speed while riding a tighter glade. Need to practice this year.

There are a few deep ones out off NW. Came across a gaper that had to of been at least ten feet deep. Scary.
tree wells...someone put up a vid last season of a treewell fall and rescue, scary as hell even to just watch, dude was buried for 5 minutes upside down, if his buddies hadn't been there he'd been done for. since seeing that i ride with my phone in my chest pocket, speeddial set for ski patrol...might not help, but then again....

i'll try to find that vid, in the meantime...

not the vid i was looking for, but this gives the idea...def make me rethink riding alone.

Stopped before a pretty big cliff out in Utah last year. Looked way too sketchy so I took off my board and tried to walk up and around it. Immediately as i got my board off I slid off the cliff, but luckily there was a solid 6 feet of loose snow at the bottom.

Yeah, boardslides always get me :L Wouldn't you hit the back of your head on a frontside?

Yes. But I wear a helmet. Gives me a little more security. The worst I've delt with is splitting my shin open and separating my shoulder. But my biggest fear is hitting my face.

Mental, how did you split your shin?
tree wells and tight tree runs. this was when I was skiing. Got stuck in a tree well when I clip a rock and tumbled to a nearby tree and sunk, thank god it was feet first and chest high.got out and went home. Second and hopefully the last, got myself wedge between the trees and my backpack was stuck somehow and my legs where jammed and I cannot release my bindings. that run was suppose to be close but I was dumb and went for it anyway. fortunately, a snowboarder showed up later and helped me out. still got the bruise to remind me not to be stupid again:laugh:
