Thirty Two Lashed - ankle pain and more

Hi everyone. Long time reader first time poster here.
I recently replaced my ten year old Burton Rampants (UK 9.5) with a brand new pair of Thirty Two Lashed Double Boas (UK 10). I had them heat molded in store and wore them around at home for a good few hours. All seemed great so I packed them for our annual holiday and first visit to Les 3 Vallées, staying in Courchevel.
I diligently reset my bindings on arrival and after a bit of a wobbly start the boots were feeling alright. After two hours of riding though, I was suffering. The structure of the boot bites in to my right ankle, leaving red, bruised and blistered patches on either side of my right ankle bone and the interior of my left ankle. It almost feels like there is a metal stud inside the boots grinding in to my ankles, particularly when turning. I’ve also developed an unpleasant calf strain in my back/left leg (I ride goofy) which I haven’t experienced before and bruising around my left heel and shins.
I’ve persevered for three days, adjusted the angle and straps of my bindings, used zinc tape and even tried gel ankle pads but the pain only got worse. By the afternoon of day three my technique was shot and I couldn’t bear to ride any more, so I hired some battered K2 Maysis boots (UK 9.5) from the local hire shop and - instant relief. I’m still getting some strain in my back leg but the ankle pain has gone and I enjoyed a good couple of hours riding before it got dark.
It’s been a disappointing experience as the Thirty Two Lashed absolutely feel like a high quality boot and are very responsive, but I think pushing on with them could have ruined the trip. My old Burton Rampants were comfortable from day one and never felt like they needed “breaking in” as such - surely bruises and blisters shouldn’t be expected…?
What do people think might be going on here? Have I gone half a size too big meaning I’m over tightening, or could it just be that Thirty Twos don’t suit my feet?
Just for info, I’ve been riding casually on and off for about 15 years with some breaks, generally spending my time cruising piste and some occasional off piste (too old to learn park now), but the Thirty Twos are only my second pair of boots.
Would love to hear other users’ experiences and opinions. Cheers, Tom.

I'm on my 2nd pair of 32 Lashed (only laces) from last season, the last pair being from 07/08. I had a pair of 05/06 TM-Twos that I absolutely wore into the ground, and before that I had a cheap pair of 99/00 Prions. I guess I've only ever owned 32 boots.

Maybe I was a chump for thinking the new Lasheds would similar or better than my old ones, but I'm not super hyped on them either. I've done a lot of experimenting with insoles, the included fit kit, and a round of heat molding. And still... they don't fit my feet like a glove, like the previous 2 pairs of 32s did. I find that I have to tighten them mid-session, which isn't a terribly uncommon thing with boots. But it's very precarious and there is some accompanying foot/ankle pain if everything isn't perfect with them. Even then, I have occasional random pains and discomfort in my back foot at the end of a run.

I'm of the mind to just sell these at a ski swap next season and bump back up to TM-Twos or something a little more "medium", perhaps a nicer liner is what I'm looking for? I'm not really a park kid anymore and maybe I should ride a slightly stiffer boot again anyhow.

All this to say: I agree with you; I find it a bit of a disappointing boot, especially compared to its older version. It could also very well be that those boots don't fit your feet. Perhaps this was your experience too, but I felt they were really nice when trying on in the store, and then riding in them was not so good.

Taking liner out and trying it on while pain is bad is the easiest way to findt the exact spot of issue. Once pinpointing the spot by pressing liner with hand mark it with marker pensil. Then its time to get creative and glue foam around this area to relieve pressure spot and just try what helps.

You dont want to add any foam on top of the area of pain but build bridge around it that relieves the pressure on it.

Precisely - out of the 7 or 8 pairs I tried on the day the Lashed felt the most comfortable in store, but riding them just felt a bit awkward. They’re stiffer than the Burton Rampants I was riding before which were also well-used so I initially put it down to that, but the pain that followed seemed excessive. I’ve another 3 days left of my trip so I’ll stick with the hire boots for now as the thought of putting my banged up feet back in to the Lashed makes me cringe. It’s a shame as they weren’t cheap and it’s not like there’s anything “wrong” with them - it’s more my feet that are the problem - and as I’ve ridden them for 3 days I can’t expect the store to take them back, but perhaps they can offer some sort of credit deal. Otherwise I guess there’s always eBay.
Hi,

Your "Long time reader first time poster here." got me - So thought I'd make the effort with my first post and share my similar experience...

  • Wanted some ThirtyTwo lashed for ages after being told how comfy they were
  • Bought ThirtyTwo lashed in a well-known board shop
  • Perfect fit, felt like I was wearing slippers - Super comfy. No problem
  • Day 1 on the hill; lasted about 3 hours - my feet/toes were shredded to bits
  • tried another half day and had the same experience. Wearing them to ride they felt really hard with no flex

Sold them - Person I sold them to told me later they had exactly the same issues;
We came to the conclusion that the sizing might have been out by at least half a size to small.

Funny thing is I really wanted to like them but they were the worst boots I'd had from 2 pairs of Nikes, Burton moto's(?), and Adidas sambas.

So, I'd sell em - Season is just ramping up, you'll make a chunk of your money back now.

I wear US10 32 TM-2's and TM-3's. They're VERY snug until they pack out. Like it's difficult to get my feet in and out and they're not comfortable until heat molding them.

I wanted to try a slightly softer boot and last year tried on the Lashed boots. They were US9.5 and fit just right with no adjustments at all. I decided to go for a half size down from what I normally wear if I found them on sale, but they sold out and I never got the chance.

But there's no way in hell I'd ever size up a half size in the Lashed boots after trying on the 9.5's and having them fit so well brand new. That's just asking for trouble.

I'd say you probably have multiple problems; boots are too big, 32 is probably not the right brand for your foot. In any case, selling them now would be a good move.

Thanks. I wear a UK 10 street shoe and for the first few years of riding I’d tended to hire boots of the same size. If I'm honest I think they were probably a bit “roomy” but I put that down to them having been filled out by hundreds of feet before me. By chance tried a 9.5 in the Burton Rampant a few years ago as they were on sale, and they fit just right.

When I went looking for a replacement I tried 9.5s preferentially but found my toes were hitting the end, particularly with Salomons and Burtons. Perhaps they would have felt more comfortable with heat molding - either way I’ll stick with 9.5s when I go looking for a new pair and will clean up my 32s for sale.
Hi, I had the same experience with switching to Burton kendo uk 10 from 32 lashed 9.5 uk tried on lots of boots and the kendo’s felt great absolutely tore up the inside heel on both feet. Not sure if it’s a foot size/ type issue. But nothing helped.
