What board did you ride today?

Couldn't find a thread like this, so figured I'd start one.

Ride the Niche Pyre with superforces. I love that board.

First day on my Surfari 157 and Cleavers. Felt bullet proof on everything, like no chatter or vibes on anything with my Thraxis boots.
Thraxis on Cleavers are indeed a great ride.
How’s the stiffness of the Thraxis compared to the insano? Thraxis were high on my list but couldn’t find anywhere to try them on.
If the Thraxis is a 10 (it isn’t), the Insano are a 12.

Although they’re warmer, the liners aren’t that thick and really pack out. They felt good initially, but I should’ve got a half size smaller. I’ve replaced the liners now… Would not recommend the Thraxis.

Today was the second day on the Thraxis with Intuition Pro Tour high volume liners. Still breaking them in and they’re a little loose ant/post up top, but there’s SO MUCH lateral drive. On firm groomers (no ice or soft bits) I was really ripping on the Maelstrom. Sidecut is only 7.4, so carves are really fast & dynamic, flying between some transitions. Spent some time working on my switch as well (off piste was dust on crust).
Pretty hard, board washed through the tree well and flicked out, tree hit my upper thigh/lower buttox LHS as I was going down. Badly bruised, just black and still bruised and it was 2 weeks ago yersterday. Very sore. The following day I was traversing a steep and fell and lanede on my ass and had the most exruciating pain for about 2-3 seconds and then nothing, weirdest sensation. A couple of hours later the pain was back, couldn't sit/sleep comfortably LOL, few panadol/neurofen to get trhought he trip but it was hard. These last 2 days feel like it's improving and the color is turning yellow so on the mend.
A few years ago I came across an unmarked stream and did a quick turn to avoid it…unfortunately as the hill rolled over I was airborne and now on a trajectory toward a tree. I saw it coming, thought I could turn, but it was pow on ice and it just slid out… board went on one side, centre of mass on the other. I hit it just below my femoral head (physiotherapist said I would’ve shattered it if I hit just a couple inches higher). I screamed in pain, unstrapped and stood on it. I figured it wasn’t broken and the flight instinct hit… I strapped back in, got down to the car and started driving home! Decided it was a bad idea and called my wife, who picked me up half way and took me to the hospital. I couldn’t walk when I got out of the car. Anyway, I separated the cartilage at the pubic symphysis and had a huge hematoma on my thigh. Physiotherapy for 2 months before I was back on a board (but it felt seriously sketchy).

Hopefully you’ve had yours looked at and had some guidance to get back on it. These things seem to keep adding up and resurfacing with age.

‘24 Stranda Shorty… not the best conditions for it, but it’s new and I wanted to ride it.
Finally got some pow… about 15 cm up top with it drifting deeper in places.

Big white?
Yeah I brought my son up for the long weekend (Yesterday was a PD day), but he wasn’t feeling well and even fevered up last night. It wasn’t very busy yesterday so I got a bunch of runs in on my own. I slipped out for a couple hours this morning, but going to take him home. Hopefully I’ll be back (and healthy)… weather report looks good!

I’ve successfully ditched my family for the rest of family day weekend! 😀

The Niche Maelstrom is great for variable conditions… so easy to ride. Saving my legs for an epic day tomorrow.

So many Jerry’s on the hill though.

Shorty in the morning… with a few runs on the Special Effects this afternoon before the fog rolled in and my legs were dead.

It’s been snowing all day, the runs are lumpy and there‘s a little pow in the trees. I’ve missed its nimble precision in the trees. I put it 2cm behind reference (almost 10 cm back on board) but it’s still not floating my added weight. I was going to go one more, but just went over the nose so I think I’ll make it 4 cm behind ref.

Nice pic!

When I got the Dump Truck I was 140lbs and rode it ahead of reference (which I think is actually 54mm back on sidecut, but 80mm back on board). Now I’m 175lbs and trying to get some float!

I rode the K2 special effects 148 today at showdown with some leftover deeper pow from a few days ago and it is just a really nice ride. I read somewhere where that you could press on your front foot to keep the nose to come up and it would stay plane on top of the snow because of the 3d spoon on the nose.. It works but it felt weird to do cuz i've never done it before. i have to practice more later.
I had mine out this morning and yeah, you do need to have more of a balanced stance. Too far back and the tail sinks and it doesn’t want to plane. But man, when you get it planing in fresh pow it feels so good! The nose doesn’t curve up much, so the tip can go under at times and it sort of naturally porpoises a bit. I’m learning to trust that it‘ll pop back up without shifting my weight back and slashing. Oddly my front leg is SO tired.

Back on the Dump Truck in the afternoon. Front foot 35mm back of reference (any more and I’d have to pop the plug out of the end of the channel), back foot 40mm back. Decent float (I’m essentially at the recommended max weight) and so maneuverable. I think this is my afternoon pow-junk board!
Maelstrom all day… crispy groomers, a little pow in the trees, windswept drifts & ice in the alpine, it handled it all. Was a rad dad and took my son through the banked slalom and a few park laps in the afternoon. I ollied off a small jump and got more pop out of the tail than I had anticipated… Getting air just feels so much riskier than it use to. Other than the odd little side hit, I think I’m about done with that.

I picked up a new Stalefish 153 on Friday, slapped on some bindings and got a few evening laps in.

Doctor’d the bindings and rode it all day Saturday. Didn’t like the crispy morning, but otherwise it’s a solid board.

Today I hit the crispy groomers with the Shorty 164 until my legs were tired and there were too many obstacles. Then I grabbed the Maelstrom 157 to relax a bit.

I haven’t used Ski track in years, but I was curious about my speed. The Shorty is very comfortable C carving at 40 kph, but I do open it up more... I hit 60 when S carving to get ahead of some traffic… Driving the nose and not holding back I hit 70 kph. I knew it felt fast, but didn’t realize it was THAT fast! The progressive sidecut is listed as 8.6, but the nose sort of rounds out to infinity and the tail is under 8m. The 1273mm effective edge feels very secure.

On the Maelstrom I topped out at 40 kph, generally carving in the mid 30’s. Sidecut is 7.4m, effective edge is 1190. Coming off the Shorty the traction bumps were very noticeable on the crispy groomer, and not in a good way. I do like that added contact under foot in sketchier conditions though.

I’m sure some people charge harder on the Maelstrom, but this was my comfort level in these conditions. The 163 would probably be a fairer comparison as well. But the Shorty is a beast… it devours groomers.

I think my speed on the Stalefish (in softer conditions) will be on par with the Maelstrom (in firmer conditions). My main purpose for the Stalefish was more relaxed carving in softer conditions, but it’ll charge more than I thought it would.

A sunny afternoon on the Stalefish… I thought the snow would be a lot softer, but it was still icy. I rode it up to 40 km/h, but it was pounding my ankles.
Yesterday’s sunshine meant even more ice today. I’m not sure if Big White’s groomers know how to work with this stuff like they do in the east. Rode the Maelstrom, which was comfortable though I could’ve used even more traction.
I had the K2 Special FX & Rome Stalefish out in some spring pow…

What A Day!
Stalefish all day! Searching out left over pow, hitting some trees, an epic fresh line under the cliff and digging trenches in the soft groomers. It’s not the playful board that I had envisioned, but it’s pretty versatile. I think this is going to be my soft snow daily driver.
These freeze thaw cycles suck… I‘m not even attempting the mornings. It reminds me of my days back east in Onterrible. Thermometers in the sun are hitting 8C in the afternoon, and while it does get a little slushy on top, the 2m of ice below is really solid.

Even with the Maelstrom, Cleavers and Thraxis my joints are taking a pounding... I’m not keeping up with my 10 yr old on skis. Maybe I need a soft board with magnetraction for ice.
