Having been laid up the last 4 weeks with a non riding health issue, I was heading up the hill for the first time in over 6 weeks. I decided that I did not want to be on a "hard charger" for my first day back, so I grabbed my old Burton Barracuda 161 that I have not been on for a couple of seasons now. For those not familiar with it, It is a tapered, directional, S profile deck designed mostly for pow. Mid flex. ( Yes, us old guys tend to hang on to stuff  )

What a great revisit! I had forgotten how easy riding it is when dealing with end of day chop. It does a great job of so smoothly getting up and over everything. Some of my stiffer decks tend to want to slam through such chop and serve the accompanying vibrations upwards. Granted the 'cuda is a much looser ride given it's profile, but I have the "heft" to be able to put it on a carve if I so desire. It was such a pleasant experience that I wonder why I ever drifted away from it. I will be reaching for it more often on the days when the desire to "charge" is not so great.

Anyone else have a similar rediscovery with a deck in your quiver?

I always start the season on my 2008 Nidecker Ultralight 163. Have 3 or 4 days on it this year. Full camber and sizeable taper. Love that board -- but wish it had early rise/rocker in the nose.

Not exactly the same experience but I find if I ride the same board 3-4 days in a row then switch to another ill find the next board to feel a little funky initially even if I know what it should feel like. Then going back to that first board feels different and less familiar also. It's because of this I have gotten my quiver down from six to three. But out of the three mainly ride one board. I've found consistency for me is best. It's like riding what you think is a stiff board, then riding a board that is actually stiff then going back and finding that first board actually isn't all that stiff. Or vice versa. Easy to forget exactly how boards ride until you do ride them. Makes me wonder when guys do reviews, did the board they reviewed or rode before that influence their review of the current board?

Occasionally I break out my old Palmer just to remind myself I ain’t worth shit on a snowboard.

more recently my Tom Sims pro has pretty much flexed out to the point of being park board territory. Using this board as my flexy park board has been lots of fun.

Haven't ridden my zoid, or ktr in a few seasons and brought them out a couple times this season. The ktr is still an amazing board and it made me question why i don't ride it more often. The zoid was also super fun and i was quickly reminded on my love hate relationship with it after driving the offset pointy nose deep into soft and crusted over snow on toe side turns

Once a year I pull out my Burton FIsh LTD 161 from 2008 for the Jake Ride. It's quite narrow by todays standards, but it's still a fun ride. I haven't hit pow in it in years though. I have a few pow-ish carving decks that I cycle through. I'm mainly betweek a 31mm taper Korua TF, and a 157 Yes Hybrid uninc DCP (when I'm feeling easy going and feeling tropical haha). Somewhat similar decks, but the Hybrid can be a butter stick if you want to, and it's really fun short radius carver that you can be lazy with. The TF is a bit more of a workout for hard carving, but just as fun! Old guy legs gravitating to softer flex boards more and more haha 🤙

2015 volkl selecta ....
while not exactly ancient its not fresh off the press either ,ridden this a lot this season so far, its been nice cold snow where thing really shines.163cm flat rocker , its a tad long for anything involving shorter turnier slashs as its bacically a pow stick that works ( exceptionally) well on good piste , for what ive had this season so far its been sensational. holds and edge exceptionaly well, base is LIGHTNING fast, this is better than lot of newer becks i have , and like noticeably faster.
.
loving this deck all over again.
im going to say its without doubt my fave rocker deck .

This. I rode my 2002 Carbon Circle and the thing tried to kill me. So much faster and stiffer than anything I ride nowadays. Not one to ride everyday, but it reminds you that so much modern stuff isnt all that.

09 Flow Quantum, stiffish true twin board with a lot of camber. Really made me realize how much I miss regular camber stiff boards. My Huck Knife is camber too but there's something about the Quantum that just wants you to push it further and further. It gives a lot of confidence and it's an awesome board. It doesn't carve as hard or clean as my Proto FR and it's not as good on ice as my Hot Knife and it's not as playful as my Huck Knife but dang has it been fun lately.

The half pipe recipe in a board is really hard to find now, stiff, true twin, ridiculous amounts of camber with no rocker or anything. All parabolic edges, no blunted tips or edge tech. I know there's a couple options out there but there's always been something about that board that's a lot of fun I could never put my finger on. I've been on boards like Custom and Custom X and they don't feel nearly the same.

I too am old (see my user name), and I too am laid up with a non riding injury (severely pulled lat). Haven't been up for about 6 or so weeks either, and only once prior to that-on my new to me Burton One Hitter. It doesn't seem like an overly aggressive deck. However, I can hopefully resume riding sometime next week, and will take it and my 2008 Nitro Pantera 157 and see which I prefer. The Pantera is stiff but I am over the recommended weight so that ought to soften it up a bit. Sucks being old-takes longer to recover from stupid injuries-especially when you re injure it worse than the original.......
