I live in and ride in Tahoe, and am thinking of cleaning out my quiver and replacing it with one of these. I consider myself a solid intermediate and think riding just one board will be good for my progression, rather than swapping all the time.

What I have currently (and ready to sell off)
  • Capita outerspace living 156
  • Burton custom X 158
  • Burton flight attendant 159
  • Burton skeleton key 154
I'm 5'-11", 160lbs, 9.5 boot

We see enough snow, especially this winter, that I think I want my daily driver to be a directional freeride type board. good for carving, good in powder. And for the truly bottomless days I might also get a dedicated powder board, 3D Fish maybe. I can usually get burton on significant discount which is why all the burton, but I'm not tied to it. I love the skeleton key but I sometimes wish it was a tad stiffer or longer. Something between my FA and SK would probably be good. I wonder if the 158 SK would even solve that issue.

Guy at the shop was recommending the excavator hard, Stratos seems like a slightly longer SK and slightly stiffer plus has the spooned out nose and tail which sounds nice, and HTH feels like it fits right between the FA and SK in burtons line. But I havent ridden any.

If you want to stick with Burton, then the Hometown Hero is a solid option. Then comes the rest of the usual suspects in the free ride focused quiver of one. Rome Ravine Select, K2 Passport or Alchemist, Niche Maelstrom (what I ride for a similar purpose in Mammoth, along with a dedicated pow board), Capita BSOD, etc.

So many solid options in that category it’s hard to choose haha.

Have spent time on the HTH and Excavator in Tahoe. The HTH is a SOLID choice, especially when faced with varied spring conditions. I would be on one now except that I'm not a fan of Burton's channel system. The fact that you can get one discounted (if you can still find one in stock) is a no-brainer.

Also check out the Passport and Instrument.
