Any advice for a hard charging dedicated board ?

Hi guys.
A new era is coming. I have just acquired a new Ride SuperPig 151 for the fun side of a short board for a strong and styled ride. I am now considering the replacement of my loved Ride Berzerker 159 I have been riding for several years. This 2016 Berzerker is a fantastic board but I was wondering myself if the « Awesome » does really exist, also considering my requirements. I considered myself as a confirmed rider (weight 143 lbs, height 5’ 9’’, boot size 9,5) looking for hard charging, fast ride and strong carving, off-piste in powder and on-piste on icy groomers (no freestyle aspect research here). The particularity of my request is the manoeuvrability and the reliability of the board in turn initiations at low speed when deep ungroomed slopes goes to moguls. This was the hard part for me with the Berzerker. Did I make the right choice with the 159 length?

Anyway, my preferences will go for,
1. Ride Commissioner (my first choice - the main doubt on this one is its availability in France)
2. Jones Carbon Flagship (a little bit expensive so - what about a 161?, maybe too long for me and particularly because this board tends to scare me a little bit when looking at the reviews... on the other hand, I do not like the wooden aspect of the regular flagship)
3. Jones Ultra Mountain Twin (can it really bring something more compare to the Berzerker? I have my doubts. Don’t want the freestyle side of this board to kill the agressivity I am looking for neither...)
4. Nitro Pantera
5. Ride Berzerker New Model (can it really bring something more compare to my actual Berzerker?)
6. Ride MountainPig
... Should I stay with my actual Berzerker?
... Any other suggestions is also welcomed?

Thank you for your advices on this list (reference and length of the board).
Enjoy your ride.

Welcome to the forum. I can feel the new era coming as well.

I've got an Amplid Surfari that fits what you're talking about. It's quite fast and stable on groomers, and slays the pow. It feels agile to me in trees and moguls, but I'm at the top of the weight range. It's a decently stiff board.

From your list, I've always wanted to ride the Pantera. I'd write Cowboys From Hell on it.

Thanks Scalpelman. I know I will be challenged on this regular Flagship which is definitely a good suggestion but I really don’t like the aesthetics of this board which I am also taking in consideration.

I just got a Rome Blur and it is pretty much designed to do everything you just said. Sadly they don't make it anymore but it's sort of a hidden gem. If you find a shop still in stock you might be able to score a good deal.

The Rome Speed Freak is what replaced it... The names alone for these two boards are the definition of what you are looking for and they deliver on the name. Definitely worth considering.

@Donutz owns both and has a review that compares the two here...

I just demoed the regular Flagship tonight in icy conditions. That's a serious board for serious people. It has great edge hold and was extremely stable. I was riding the 162W and it was easy to get on edge and turn...I normally don't like anything but full camber boards in those icy conditions but the Flagship held on really well.

In no way did I feel like it needed carbon in it. I was very impressed with the way it handled icy moguls and bumpy hard terrain. Not the board I'd want to take through the park but other than that I was very impressed.

86 kg 9,5 US here.

I’ve ridden my bud’s Superpig L on several occasions but haven’t been on the Berserker to say if it’s really hard to turn at slow speeds.

From your list of the potential additions I’ve been on:
- the Commissioner 158 (demo event, a couple of laps and didn’t want to ride it more). Thought about buying that board before that but it didn’t impress me. Felt somehow super stiff and dead. I was happy to give it back and keep on riding my Pentaquark 158 that isn’t any softer but has a much more powerful lively feel. Ride makes a non-alluminium version of it for the next season. Should be better.

- the new regular Flagship 161 (on multiple occassions as my bud owns one). Feels mid stiff, can do just about everything well. A true camrock with the 3D nose feels really forgiving for such a board and it slays uneven terrain super well. I also prefer full cambers with 130 + effective edge on groomers but for a camrock it’s fun on groomers.

- Nitro Pantera in 160, 163, 166 and 166 W (me and my buds own these sizes). That’s a full camber with a lot of EE in the bigger sizes. Grips on ice very well, the 163/166s are better on ice than the Flag or Penta. Stiff but not super stiff, a lot of torsional flex so it doesn’t require much speed to get it on the edge. The only issue are moguls. That board is super lively and wants to jump off anything. I don’t enjoy it bombing moguls at all, any of these boards make this job easier. You can bend it torsionally quite easily so if you keep the mogul line well it will deliver. The most technical (‚catchy’) board from the ones I’ve been on your list.

I’d pick the Flag from your list. Another good idea is the Surfari (bud owns two - the softer old one 157 and the new one 161 that is much stiffer) . Better locked in feel on groomers, way stiffer tail and nose than Jones.
You could also look at Yes PYL. I haven’t been on that one but flexed it carefully and I’ve owned/ridden 6 Yes boards that all have the same balanced damp/lively feel that helps on moguls.

Thanks Yeahti87 for your contribution. This is a tremendous review which helps a lot.
Disappointed as regards to your feeling about the commissioner. Really thought it was the one for me...
Definitely consider your review on the Pantera which looks great for my considerations. Any suggestion on the most suited length (weight 143 lbs, height 5’ 9’’, boot size 9,5 - probably the 160)? Do you know any upgrade on the 2020/21 version? I will really be interested to have a comparison between the Pantera and the Berzerker. I will send another post hoping a member had the opportunity to test both?
I keep an eye on the PYL as well.
Do you have any experience on the Custom X? Does it mean that going to Burton preferably results in a bindings change, fitted for the channel? Always though this one was too versatile for what I am looking for. I already have the Ride SuperPig 151 but haven’t tested it yet. Now only looking for a second board charging hard and riding fast. No reason for this second board to do something else. I am just looking for the best in this « Formula 1 » area. By the way, what was your impression on the SuperPig? Would you put it in this range of boards? What’s your feeling about the short length of this board?
Thank you again Yeahti87 for your experience and your relevant inputs. A GREAT review.
Take care and hope to hear from you again.

Another interesting board is the Endeavor Alpha which has design aesthetic based on Lamborghini cars. I picked one up because it was on sale for $280 or so on their website for the 2020 model and I believe they have more.

It's a neat board. Felt similar to the Blur on hard pack/groomers. Mostly designed for resort hard charging. The tip and tail do not rise much above the snow so may not perform so well in powder. So in non powder conditions it's a hard charging machine.

I did ride it through a few small pow stashes and didn't really notice much trouble though. Would not be my pick for a powder day.

My 2 cents:

Commissioner: I rode the original Timeless and liked it for what it was - a stiff, beast of a board with minimal torsional flex and reasonable liveliness/dampness balance. Still have it for the super steep morning laps. My 2nd gen. Commissioner is slightly mellower in flex but is a little less damp, too. It's a better all mountain board than the Timeless. IMO, both boards are very binding dependent. For me, something with a well cushioned composite baseplate was the best match to offset the aluminum harshness. Metal chassis bindings felt unnecessarily harsh. One thing to note about the Commissioner - and may be you know this already from your Superpig - the top finish is pretty fragile. The aluminum will scratch and show damage pretty easily. Also, Timeless/Commissioner aluminum tops have been known to delaminate. Neither my Timeless nor Commissioner did but they look beat to shit.... you just have to ignore it or be one with it.

Carbon Flag: I think the carbon version is a different animal from the wood version. Stiffer, yes, but that's not the end. It rebounds and returns the rider's energy better, too. It results in the carbon feeling livelier than the wood but just as damp, if not more.Very confidence inspiring to go at mach speeds. But why the Carbon and not the new Ultra?

Mountain Pig: Wait for next year's model. It has the split tail like on Alter Ego. This will make this board a little different from the others on your list, though.

Others: You seem to count aesthetics as a key factor. And you seem to like carbon. Have you considered the Nidecker Ultralight?

Thanks robotfood99 for this great review. If I was considering the carbon, it was just because of a possible discount on this 2020 model compared to the excessive cost of a 2021 ultra version. The carbon looks better as well.

I’m a lot heavier than you at 106ish kg without gear but almost same size boots 270mp.
I would recommend the Tur Buteo 157 at your size. Felt like a mini rocket with all the grip on hard groomers
Also worth considering are the Stranda Descender and Shorty.
Maybe a Dupraz D1? Had a 5’5” and it was a blast even for me at my size.
United Shapes Orbit rides 6cm longer than it’s length and is a hard charging board that only wants to go faster. Bit much and unforgiving in slow speeds though.

Man, the Ride Commissioner looks like a serious deck. Titanal construction, huge open sidecut. Completely unlike anything else that's on the market right now (at least the mass market). Almost BX-like.

If you're interested in an option that's local and should be available, the Dupraz D1 6'+ will be a SERIOUS board at 143 lbs. You're at the lower end of the "Confirmed" weight range (65 kg). It's 178 cm length, but rides like roughly a 162 because of shorter effective edge and a huge nose.

I'm about 181 cm / 6' tall, 95 kg / 210 lbs, the 6' + is what I grab when I'm expecting DEEP pow or just want to go fast. At your weight, it's going to be a rocket. If I rode the French Alps with a low treeline and more open terrain, I'd ride it a lot more.

I also really enjoy charging hard on a United Shapes Orbit 157. At your size, I'd probably go with the 154. Don't get put off by the short length, they ride about 6-7 cm bigger. My 157 rides more like a 164. The only time I notice the decreased length is in deep pow, when I wish I had more nose.

Man the Commissioner looks awesome. I had no idea it existed. If they can fix the delamination problems it would be amazing. Thanks for the inadvertent heads up.

EDIT:
The name is horrible though, searching for it you get results like Rhode Island Commissioner's office.

Check out the Endeavor BOD (Board of Directors). It's my new daily driver, and I enjoyed it the one day I used it at the end of last season. You may not want a true twin though.

Pantera has a great edge grip, but it's not that damp on hardpack snow as I would like to.

In 20-30cm powder ride was pretty good, very stable.
I wouldn't take it as a powder board, freeriding in less than 30cm - yeah, why not.

Here is some recent footage when I took it for the first time to the higher mountains.
I'm riding 163 (I weigh 70kg) for the first time in some steeper terrain.
There are not many(if any)Pantera freeride vids on yt
