Hey all,

Looking for your experience and recommendations. Following up on the great input you guys had on your winter vehicles I test drove a ton of cars and settled on a '25 subaru outback onyx xt.

I chose this model for the beefier xmode and better engine but stopped short of the wilderness for various reasons.

Anyway, looking to grab dedicated winter tires for it. In the past I've had blizzak ws80/90s on another vehicle but it looks like they now have a model called Blizzak DM-V2 they recommend for the outback.

I've also heard good things about the Michelin x-ice snow.

I'll be driving it in the northeast so potentially tons of ice, snice, slush, and snow.

Thanks!

I’ve had the dm-v2 before. I think they’re just rated for higher weight vehicles that aren’t trucks like suvs and cross overs.

I’ve used the best and the not so best snow tires. I think you don’t need the tires with the best stats on the market unless your car kinda sucks on snow anyway. I used to shred while driving rear wheel drive sports cars with studded blizzaks but I’ll put just about anything rated for snow and ice on my Volvo.

Personally I’ve loved my general arcticmax and am on my second set. They use an older Nokian mold. They’re great on snow and ice. But a bit squirmy in the dry/wet due to the blocky tread pattern. The other nice thing is that they are a true snow tire so don’t wear down to an all season. With that said my next set will be the new nokian happas when they add more sizes

Nokian Hakkas can’t be beat. I thought it was hyperbole bullshit until I got my first set, they are a game changer, especially in wet snow and slush, no other tire I’ve had even comes close in the wet snow/slush. On dry compact snow, they’re even with all the other best snow tires, no better, but no worse, it’s really that wet/slush where there is no comparable tire.

The DM-V2 is a rather old tire, around the time of being the equivalent of the WS-80. But the WS-80 got replaced by the WS-90, and the DM-V2 hasn't been replaced yet.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 is a solid choice also and the Michelin Xice-Snow.

I'm partial to anything Nokian (ran the WRG3s and WRG4s for years on an Impreza, and they were really great for an all weather tire), and currently running Blizzaks, which have been very confidence inspiring in the mix of rain/slush/snow we see in the Tahoe drive up from the bay area. Don't get the hard freeze that often here, so can't speak to those really low temps.
