I think Gentemstick kicked this off in 2003 with the Mantaray, and now have a few similar boards themselves. Basically a setback pow board that’ll carve, featuring a crescent moon tail that‘s sort of between a swallow and a diamond (either of which may also be pow carvers). The blunt nose & tail tend to result in a good amount of effective edge for the length, but this isn’t always the case.
The Hovercraft was supposedly inspired by it, though it’s stiffer with a larger sidecut radius… and a bit more ‘volume-shifted‘ as well, for American feet.
Was this the beginning of the Volume Shift?
Rome had the Pow Division; then the Service Dog & Stalefish:
K2 has the Excavator and the pointier nose Niseko Pleasures:
Niche has the Pyre, though not as set back:
Libtec has a few:
.nerd Superposition:
Weston Eclipse:
Burton has a few that are somewhat similar, like the Fish which has a narrower tail that’s really meant to sink and it really doesn’t carve. Similarly the Rossignol Sashimi seems to be more pow specific as well.
Maybe some of the one’s that I’ve shown don’t have the same pow/carve ethos, but there’s certainly similarities.
Which ones have I overlooked?
I’ve got the Stalefish and really like the 3D shaping in the pow, but I’m kind of interested in a softer Mantaray for tight surfy carves… though it’s expensive!
